As has been proven elsewhere on the forum that my grasp of what car uses which electronic system, has been tenuous & I would like to thank those who have cleared up this grey area.
Apparently the Lucas system ran up until 2003/4 when it was supplanted by the Pektron units; the Lucas system, by general consensus, was reliable & at the latter end ran OBD2 compliant MEMs3, whilst the Pektron unit has had its irritations, especially the relays.
Now MG Rover weren't to know that relay problems were further down the line & it must have proven itself reliable at the time. Accepting the improvements in security with the Pektron, which I'm sure could have been implemented in the Lucas system, why the change?

Well this is the cynical side of me coming out . I think that due to MG/Rover's financial constraints the change must have been cost driven . The real reason could have been Lucas industries were also having their own problems in that they were also seeing their future hitting the buffers . I am sure the someone will disagree on here but that's what makes this forum so good .
John Ps . Forgot to add that my Pektron/ EKA woes are still not resolved .
