Cam Belt Noise
Hi
I had new cam belt (dayco) and genuine water pump and tensioner fitted last year,I was going to fit myself, but as I needed cam carrier resealing and new seals I entrusted the work to a mechanic where I used to work.He did work at a Rover dealership before, but I think that the belt has been fitted too tight,he did appear to fit it very tightly as pulled over cam sprockets.
It certainly does have less slack in it ,than the video posted on you tube by Technozen.
The belt seems to get noisier as the engine warms up,and has a strange noise at idle, this was there before belt change, but I thought it might disappear with new parts.
1st video is with cold engine,2nd when warm and whines when revved, the third is the odd noise when warm, not present when engine is cold.
Is the cam sprocket run out normal ?
I am thinking of refitting the belt a tooth slacker, and retensioning to the lower mark on the tensioner adjuster.
Wonder what others think, and if anyone has an idea on what the odd the odd noise is .
PS its a 2004 135 51k on clock

That doesn't sound right at all. Contact Jon Norris of Rough luck racing and ask him to listen to the videos. He's pretty good at coming back to you.

I don't know if it is an artefact of the video compression, but it looks like the belt cover is also moving!
Check the belt edges for wear
Something was not assembled correctly, as cam pulley should not have any Run-out either.
If belt was too tight then expect damage to waterpump and/or tensioner pulley. It might also have damaged cam bearings!
Final thought, disconnect alternator belt and test again, just in case alternator bearing is failing.
Otherwise it is a dismantling job to investigate.

Hi
The cover is moving(it doesn't when outer cover is on)
I have already checked alternator by removing belt, the cam pulleys have always had that much run out since I've had the car.
The car has only done just over 1 K since belt change,so I hope no damage done.

Hi . Well after seeing the videos and hearing the noise ,I think its the pulleys touching the inner side of the casing . My TF has had its first run this year and after seeing this I went out to have a look as it was running and the casing doesn't move at all and it shouldn't . I cannot understand how this run out is occurring as the end of a cast cam will not bend . Weird ! As David has suggested give John Norris a ring , he has many good endorsements from folk on here.
