I've never had a problem...but I carry some clips to repair the wiper control arms ...if they come apart....only use the tf on fair weather days....so I can expect the wiper system to last a while.

Mine was making a racket last winter, after I stripped it I found the bearing had gone. Rebuilding was far to much like hard work so I bought a second hand assembly from a member of the T bar for a tenner, worked a treat. They are quite expensive to buy new and I believe the new ones still let water in and fail.

On my first TF I fitted a Mike Satur linkage when it failed at about 60K miles, used daily, so wipers were needed often.
It was a bit tricky to do, and some fettling was required if I recall.
My current TF is still going strong on its original, although the pivots are getting a bit loose now.
The motors have a tendancy to allow ingress, may be a good idea to keep a good second hand spare on the shelf...in fact I will source one the next time I visit Bitz.

Thanks yes they are expensive a second hand on e seems a plan, the problem is I don't use the car very much so when I do they probably won't work, try not to use car in rain but need them to work for the dust lol

You saw the photo of the original motor from Hesketh.... It was grim.

The motor that rover used actually has a drainage system, but in the F and TF it's fitted in a different orientation to other cars and incredibly faces up rather than down.

I bought a new one, but before I fitted it, took it apart (quite easy) and drilled a small hole in the bottom edge of the housing to make up for the missing drainage.

From time to time I give it a squirt of WD-40, and so far - touch wood - I've had no more issues. I did wonder about getting a sheet of plastic and using a hot air gun to heat form a plastic deflection panel to fit between it and the scuttle to try to keep the worst of the rain out, but like so many other projects, it's a way down the to-do list

Hi I did drill a hole in my present one,but the last time it got hot the magnets fell out and when I glued them back in the glue filled the hole back doh, found a s/h one on the bay £35 delivered so probably order that providing car starts next time I try to use it!

Mine failed. The motor was waterlogged and scrap. The mechanism kept coming apart too.
I got a good second hand motor, checked it internally, added a little grease, put it back together and then popped the whole thing inside a plastic bag! Tied loosely at the top to allow air circulation.

The main issue of water, in my experience, is that rain collects under the scuttle panel and drops directly onto the wiper motor! So the additional plastic bag prevents that.

I also invested in the Satur wiper mechanism at the same time.

That was around 5 years ago and I've never had an issue since. On checking the motor it's still bone dry in there so plastic bags are good for something!;)

Incidentally, there is a common misconception that a Freelander wiper motor can be substituted. They are much cheaper to buy even though they are virtually identical to the MG one. In fact externally they are identical.
Unfortunately the one difference is that the internal switching and the activation stalk on one is negative switching and the other is positive! I know, I wasted a full afternoon trying to figure out why the Freelander motor would work perfectly off the car and plugged into the electrics, then as soon as I bolted it up to the car body it blew the fuse.

A few years back a friend asked me to look at replacing the wiper motor in his off road competition vehicle with a stepper motor system. We didn't go ahead with the job in the end for other reasons, but I recall there being some relatively inexpensive weatherproof motors that would probably fit the bill with a bit of bracketed work. By the time you factored in the control logic and the H-bridge board for the stepper you would be looking at slightly more than a brand new wiper motor.... But it would last longer and you could add a range of wipe modes like learned-period intermittent, random, double wipe and pause etc. Might be a fun project to look at.

Thought: someone did a single wiper convertion - I remember the photo but not who it was.... That used a different motor..

Thanks for that but not for me, not enough time or skill but my s/h motor came today and it is so much quieter thought it was an MG characteristic but it was just my motor was Knackered. Now just need some jets that water actually comes out of?
