MGF Trophy 160 suspension

After selling my MGF about 15 years ago , last year I bought a MGF 160 Trophy in (I thought) VGC and for top dollar.

I realised the suspension was extremely hard and I put that down to a combination of the lower ride and low profile tyres. It is hard enough for my wife to refuse to ride in it. I posted earlier about the possibility for fitting smaller wheels with greater profile tyres - which I was assured was not possible.

I recently took the car to be waxoyled and the mechanic (who now owns my old MGF) reckons that the suspension should not be anything like as hard and it is faulty.I have to say if you jump on a wing to bounce it, there is almost no movement at all ! He is talking about fitting new hydragas displacers ( which AFAIK are not now obtainable) or the replacement coil spring kit - either way an expensive exercise.

Can anyone

1. recommend someone to give a second opinion - I live near Colchester North Essex or

2. give me a better way to check it and

3. put me in touch with someone who can recondition / recharge my existing displacers if that is necessary

Thanks in advance - I really need to sort this out so the Missus and I can use the car as I intended.

Probably best bet for getting repaired/reconditioned discplacers.

Thanks I have been in touch with Hydragas Services in Telford. I may get a refurbished set from them but It a bit far to go for them to refit the units there.

How do i find a good mobile mechanic who can do the job in my garage - Colchester North Essex?

Graham - who are Alfa and how do i get in touch with them?

MG & Alfa are in Oldham, try this crew. http://www.hydragasandhydrolasticservice.com/about-us.html. They are in Telford & I've a spare set of spheres waiting to go on my next trip to that area. Said to be good.

Hi davidej. I live in Wivenhoe and have a TF160. Whilst not knowing what yours is like we could always meet up and compare if you are interested. At least it will give you a benchmark comparison with standard springs. The ride on ours is hard but not as uncomfortable as yours clearly sounds.

What is the distance between the bottom of the front wing and the centre of the front wheel?

It's noticeably more on the drivers side - about 350 mm compared with about 320 on the passengers.

NORM - I have sent you a private message with my phone no. I would really like to meet up and swap notes.

Hi again David. Following our conversation i've just noted that the MGTF centre have a trophy for sale so Sacha would be able to compare the ride with yours.
