You know how it is. I have my lovely little low-mileage TF, and had a lovely (rare sunny) day today flying around in it, trying to keep my Peaky Blinders cap on (I’m tall, and wind catches my head – just).

But… can’t help wondering about converting it to VVC for some more top end poke. I’m sure I’m not the first…

The good news is that I have a dedicated MG/Rover specialist nearby who really knows his stuff with these cars. The bad – well, that’s what I want you to tell me! Anybody got a vague idea of cost? I’m guessing I’d need a cylinder head and maybe a different ECM, but is there much more to it than that?

Thanks :D

Your best bet is to sell your TF & get a 160, which is vvc.

And when you get the vvc you will be tuning that as well has there ain't a massive difference....if your looking for a tf that makes your innards move back on acceleration then fit a Honda engine or turbo charge the rover. When going for the Honda conversion the company doing it fit a brake system to match has even the 160 braking system ain't up to the job........turbos have been fitted to the tfs has I've read on here....I once owned a subaru 2 litre turbo...it spoils you and normally asperated engines feel very lame in comparison....a turbocharged petrol engine has a massive gain in acceleration. ..just a quick press of the throttle can make passengers hold there stomach with a slight moan has there insides touch the backs of the seat....far more than the acceleration of a turbo diesel....not yet looked in to pros and cons of fitting the turbo...maybe too much heat in that bay but they can be water cooled....I've rebuilt turbo chargers on a regular basis so even picking a used subaru turbo up on the second hand market can easily be reconditioned with a new kit.I believe the non vvc engine is the better engine to turbo charge ..after reading posts about the subject...watch this vid of a mgtf rev counter the non vvc mgtf in the vid has been turbocharged.....watch that rev counter and listen to those tyres trying to kill the michelin man.

And here is a pic of the k series turbocharged engine..

Engine shown is rover 75 k series 1.8 turbo
These guys in the next vid fitted a t16 to a mgf

Give me NASP over a turbo every time with petrol, far more progressive power and more drivable.

Hogweed - what engine do you currently have?

Home to black Alfa Romeo 159 3.2 V6 Q4 ,green MGF VVC and red MG Maestro T16.

MG - the friendly marque.

Yeah I’m not interested in getting into turbos or anything complicated, or getting another car. I was lucky to find one with only 13000 on the clock, dry stored since 2010, absolutely mint, so I’ll be keeping her.

It’s the 135 engine – like I say, if it’s relatively straightforward (for a mechanic, not me) to do, I’m going to think about it – if not, I’ll leave her as she is :D

Yeah I was very lucky - I know her history too. There's 14000 on her now - mostly fairly high revved ;) they're fun cars, that's for sure - woke me up again after 8 years of plodding around in my trusty Rover 75 tractor... before that I had an M3 :omg:

I've left my 135 tf standard has its working well and doesn't cover enough miles for me to want to tune it up....due to go back into hybernation for the winter at the end of October.

Hi I have a TF160 that in my opinion was a bit flat only bought it as it it was offered it for the right money have always liked the look of the F and TF but wasn't really after one, came with hard top AP brakes lowish miles 47K etc so I thought why not do like the car but a bit to much like hard work to get the best out of it really lusted after an Elise tried an supercharged one but god they are cramped and although they hardly depreciate but 10 to 30 times the price of an MG anyway going off subject had mine remapped and it is a LOT better. Is the best way forward to try an 160 or better still a remapped one and see what you think before committing could then buy a 160 then transfer parts?

I live in N Ireland - it's ALWAYS winter here. But I take it out in dry weather only - it's just a toy really... it's fine, it's fun, I just feel it's a little flat. Of course, this might be entirely down to my normally driving a turbo diesel, where you always get that rush...

Oh, don’t get me started on remapping N/A engines… I used to hang out with a BMW racing team, and they tried every chip and map they could find – none of them produced any power increase at all. In fact, most of them reduced power, but gave the illusion of extra by mucking about with the power curve to make it more peaky.

Turbos are a different matter of course
