Further update, decided to reset the CVT using Pscan, error code P0500 cleared. Attempt to complete the Fast Adaption process, in accelerating to the 55km/h got a loud noise, engine redlined and no drive. Now looking to find a CVT specialist local to me and see what's gone wrong and how cheap a fix it is?
I assume there are more hens teeth than spare CVT units out there? Anyway fingers crossed as my usual go to mechanic is on holiday for a few more weeks.

There is one currently for sale on eBay. Shipping costs to Australia might prove prohibitive. I got an email from ebay saying the seller was open to offers. Catastrophic failure on CVT normally means the drive belt is broken.
A wee tip when searching for CVT parts. Rover used the gearbox on other models often listed as Rover 400 45 25 mgzr ?gearbox etc. Same box( Same problems).
Please double check this information before you spend your hard earned Aussie dollars

Many thanks El gordo I have emailed the seller on both eBay and the company website, but have not yet had a reply back. Is due to go into the workshop early next month, just to see how catastrophic it is, maybe they can advise?

Thanks to Cobber I have located and bought a used CVT box from Allford, $1980 inc freight to Perth. My only other option was a complete rebuild at over $5K all in.

Update
Have fitted the new gearbox, refilled the suspension and cleared warning lights on dash. thanks to pscan. Have put correct fluid in gearbox and fluid levels are good. No errors now on dash.
However gearbox is stuck now in 1st gear. Unable to reset using pscan so that fast adaptation can be performed. The P D R N etc are all good on dash display and lights work on the shifter surround. So doesn't sound like an electrical issue?
Any ideas as to what to look for. Gearbox is used but was tested I am told before delivery.
Regards
Dave

ROVER 25 STUCK IN FIRST GEAR
Dave, here is an email sent to a CVT owner from Z.F. the makers of the gearbox.
Common issues with the transmission in the rover application causing failure codes and car to only seemingly drive in emergency mode like being stuck in 1st or 4th in a manual car depending on which sensor is faulty.
1.... Transmission output speed sensor faulty. Replace sensor.
2.... Inhibitor switch signal corrupt due to water in the switch connection to the gearbox. Replace switch ,clean connection and reseal with silicone sealant.
3..... Ratio control actuator faulty or wiring connection to it loose on gearbox. Its the round connector on front of gearbox ) clean ,spray with contact cleaner, refit.
4.....Gearbox interface unit. Check wiring. Rear boot left side.
5..... Mix up of camshaft and transmission output sensor. Sensors look the same.
Hope this gives you something to start with; also came across this by Phillip pscan. There is an mg specialist in old Windsor called Andy Roberts. I know he has a lot of experience with stepspeeds he helped me a lot with testing of the software release that included support for it. I looked up his phone number 01753859140. Can't find email.
Good luck............. Davy

I have a 2002 TF with an intermittent CVT ratio clutch and the same non clearable PO500. Tried a different speed sensor from another box I have and no different, Having just found this thread I thought I would change out the GIU as I have another. Same result . PO500 will not clear.
Tomorrow I will change over the CPU. I have PScanif I need to relearn the interface.
