Hi All Bit of a quandry. I need to replace the two gearchange cable end joints and have purchased replacements. The only problem is that they are the same shank length.

The original joint shanks are approx 17 mm and 27 mm in length respecyively. I approach the supplier and was told that they are all the same length approx 17 mm.

However fitting them means the gear lever is hard over to the righthand side!

If anyone has "everyday modifications for your MG" by Roger Parker, on page 178 you can clearly see that the end joints are different shank lengths.

To try and get the correct ones is nearing impossible.

Has any one any suggestions or a possible supplier I may approach?

Hi
Is it the that you need a longer shank to get the adjustment right. The cables are also adjustable at the gear lever end but are a pain to get at.
When I fitted my MG Maina bell crank I had the same problem and solved it by using an M6 connector nut and a length of M6 threaded rod
purchased from my local Toolstation.
Just cut a small length of rod to attach the M6 nut onto the end of the bell crank and the cable end fits in to other end of the nut.
Nuts can but cut down to get the required extension length required.
A cheap and simple solution.:broon: :broon:

Hi Talkingcars

I think it was MG Mania (but could be wrong), as it was a while ago and only just got arround to fitting them. Or trying to. One fitted, one not, due to length of shank.

I bought a cable end joint kit from MGOC Spares about 3 years ago now and the twn end joints it came with were both the same length, probably 17mm.

Hi

I think the MGF and MGTF are differnrt cables. Not too sure but have been told so. However, it does not negate that my current cat had two different sizes and the same size ones I bought will only fit on cable not the other.

The M6 connector with some threaded bar and a dab of thread lock looks to be there easiest solution, and then gives you time to look around for a connector with a longer shank to fit at a later stage.

Incedentally, I've just dived under Hesketh, and both are the same length - around 17mm. I replaced both of my cables front to back (not a job for the faint hearted!) Around seven years ago. I don't recall there being any problems of too little adjustment to centre the gear lever... But it was a while back, and we do get very good at blocking out all the trauma that these jobs create ;)

Hi All quick update.

I found an old post from David Aiktgate (who I have PMed) he had two different sized cable joint when he updated his gear cables:

https://www.the-t-bar.com/forum/21-david-aiketgate-s-guides/88454-gear-cables-bell-crank-fittings-how-to-replace?start=0

I must be able to get them from somewhere!

Got your pm but can't reply for some reason.
Anyway, as you read I had the opposite issue in that my originals were the same length and the new ones different.
I think that the mk2F( mine) and Tf use the same ends, but the MK1 F has the different sizes.

My new ones came from another member who had bought new cables but was using a Satur bellcrank which comes with different cable end fixings. So the new end joints that came with the new cables were redundant.

Subsequently, I replaced the bellcrank and end joints with a Satur bellcrank. I honestly don't know what I did with the old end joints, probably threw them out...

The Satur bellcrank is probably your best option. It's reasonably priced and will solve your issue. Plus you get a much better gear change...
