Not done much on the mg has late..well nothing to do but drive and I haven't had much time for that has our 2nd oldest car is a kia 1600 crdi 2007...boring you might say but the Mrs has had it from new and won't get rid...it's had a miss for ages and she keeps mentioning flat spots but never mind i said its getting on a bit...took 2 weeks off and decided to look at it...injector i thought so i did a leak test by connecting 4 empty water bottles to the leak off connecters on each injector..after starting the engine the bottles started to fill.....the idea is the faulty injector sends more diesel back to tank and hence more in the bottle...
Ace I thought has number 2 fed more into its bottle...I had the injector reconditioned and fitted it
Has well has premium diesel and injector cleaner I treated the car like I was riding red rum on the final straight..I laughed with excitement..the excelleration was wicked 126bhp new and it goes like a rocket...Did it cure the miss...Did it shite..pulled out the map sensor that is in the intercooler and noted signs of oil leakage around those intercooler hoses..off came rhe intercooler and hoses..cleaned it by flushing the oil out of it with a large can of white spirit i had and refitted it.
Then I saw the problem has I stuck my fingers in the induction and pulled out what looks like jet black marmite...off came the induction...why not I'm on holiday from building diesel engines after all.
helping the planet ..well these diesels at that age are equipped with exhaust gas recycling and they send crappy exhaust gases back through the induction ..all in the name of stopping us having hot weather.....induction off and this is what I found.
Some of the inlet ports were nearly closed with carbon...cruddy black and the induction restricted with the same...after scraping out the most from the ports..injectors removed and blasted with air line..induction had to be steam cleaned but came out like new..photo of carbon next to a large can of waxoyl to gauge the size of matter
Built it all back together and it was that moment of excitement has you turn the key....yep it started with no smoke and no missing..revved freely...chuffed at saving the little beast from the scrappies has a garage would of charged a bit for this and I've done a bit for the planet...just got to get rid of that carbon now and those 4 empty plastic bottles and seventy pairs of disposible gloves that are in a pile ...might have time to go out in the mg tomorrow...I hope

Ahh yes , the good old EGR valve . What a great aid to the diesel engine that is . For those who don't know what one is, basically it's the diesel engine 's equivalent of smoking 60 Capstan full strength a day ! EGR stands for ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation ) and it was the bain of my life while I worked for London Taxis. They caused more trouble than they are worth and block up for fun . Cleaning them was the equivalent of trying to dig coal from a small orifice. The engines very often ran better if we blocked them off. What a great invention ! :pinch: :

Like your discription of the egr john....smoking 60 capstan a day is enough to make anyone missfire and have flat spots...I've stopped smoking now but that reminded me of a guy from work who arrived smoking and he walked across the yard like he had been riding the hovis delivery bike up that steep hill.
