2003 MGTF - Leak of fuel when I fill the tank to full - but stops after about an hour sitting on the drive so I guess the fuel leaks out until the fuel level drops below the 'problem area' . The question is what is the problem area. I removed the fuel gauge cover and all looks OK there but when I remove the engine inspection cover and looking around I suspect the fuel filler pipe or the connector when it joins the tank is the culprit. I have looked around but cant find any guides on how to check and replace the fuel filler pipe - it looks burred away under the air filter and all sorts of other stuff etc.

Anyone got a guide on the steps needed to do this?

thanks

Sorry, can't offer anything very helpful but have you downloaded the Workshop Manual from here ? I've looked at the MGF version and it has some diagrams of the fuel system including the tank and filler system.

It might be worth checking the filler neck breather pipe perhaps?

Robin ;)

Yes - thanks - have downloaded the manual earlier and does have a few diagrams but no guide on how to check / remove. I will see if anyone else has done this and can offer any advice otherwise will have to just start and remove things as necessary till I can see what is going on. .:yesnod:

I got the fuel filler pipe removed bit fiddly but not difficult. I did not find anything obvious like split rubber or loose connections but did notice it has probably been changed at some time and may have been put back together without all surfaces being very clean so leaked around the joints. The 'jubilee' clips were also not as tight as happen they should be.

This is how I got the filler pipe out to inspect and clean.

1) Jack rear nearside and secure on axle stands. There may be fuel spills / fumes - obvious caution required !
2) Remove rear nearside wheel
3) Look up and you will see a red gater around the filler pipe - remove the 3 for 4 small bolts you can see ( mine were plastic) and pull back the gater.
4) Remove the engine inspection cover
5) Remove the airfilter to throttle body pipe
6) Remove the airfilter top cover and remove the airfilter
7) Push out the front rubber pipe where is goes into the airfilter box
8) Remove the small screw holding in the rear pipe to the bottom of the airfilter
9) Pull the airfilter box upwards to loosen from it's mounts and pull forwards to pull off the rear air pipe.
10) Remove the remaining screws holding the red gater.
11) Remove the filler cap and unscrew the two screws holding the filler in place.
12) Undo the two 'jubilee' clips clamping the rubber connecting pipe to the tank and filler pipe.
13) Pull the rubber connecting pipe off the tank
14) Remove the breather pipe from the filler pipe.
14) The whole filler pipe assembly can now be removed out by juggling around.
15) Replacement is reverse of the above.

Hope this helps
