I am extremely interested in electric onversion. Is it possible to copy all electric information to a new thread, which can be added to as the knowledge expands

Maybe a subforum for EV?

Subforum could work - there's certainly way too much info for a single thread.

The other forum I joined is much more established regarding EV conversions, but you guys are way friendlier :)

Immo,

You can get a plug in parameter module for most Siemens inverters, including the older ones, usually called a BOP - basic operator panel or a more advance AOP - advance operator panel. These can enable you to program and monitor the inverter without a PC. They are compact and just plug into a com port on the PC. The AOP will allow you to download and upload the parameter into the AOP too.
If its Siemens you can get some software called "Starter" that allows you to communicate with most new and some older inverters. It will run on newer PCs and is good for XP to Windows 7 at least. I should have a copy somewhere if you need one. If your inverter is a Micromaster I have a BOP available too.

Sundance,

Thanks for the info - the inverter i've in mind is an older one (Simovert 6SV) that was originally designed as a drop in for a number of EVs of the day. It's currently in the hands of a chap who did a conversion of a Lotus Elise S1 with a duplicate one. The firmware is specialised for EV applications & specific to the family of motors which it came with. I believe the one that I've earmarked is actually from one of the Ford Ranger EV pickup trucks! Since the motor it's with is already mated to a Rover PG1 gearbox, same that our cars have - it seemed like the best option for me - saves me the hassle of engineering a solution to mount it to the gearbox. Inverter is a 100kW liquid cooled unit, designed to take up to 380VDC. (I'll be running it at the top of it's voltage range to squeeze out the most avaliable power)

The software to configure it is called SIADIS I believe - and from the chap who used one in his Lotus, it doesn't play nice on modern PCs because it requires a hardware UART chip that most modern computers lack. I'm hoping that it won't be a massive issue as it shouldn't need too much configuring, just setting the operating/safety thresholds for voltage current temperature etc.

Once again, I'm sorry I derailed your thread :) Hopefully once I make some more progress, I'll update my own one...

Nick
