Steering rack wear

More from a leaning point of view on my last MOT it said slight wear in the steering rack. I was wondering if this relates to rack & pinion wear of is their joints bearing that could be the main culprit. Is it possible to repair in 'the shed' or is it a specialist job not worth taking on?

Track rod ends are an easy fix for anyone with jack and socket set, the car will need to be re-tracked after fitment.
Removing the steering rack is a much bigger job.

I have looked at the removal of the steering rack in the manual and read far too much about this operation. if the rack needed replacing I was booking it in for next spring when I hope to drop the front subframe and refuburbish.
I was just curious when the advisory comes up as wear but not excessive. Would the track rod ends be the main culprit or wear in the rack and pinion.
Whilst the milage is 67000 I'm sure normal driving wouldn't put that amount of wear in the components. But of course, I assume most of the wear would be concentrated on a particular spot.

Simply eliminate the track rod ends with examination and you know where you stand.

Track rod ends are easily replaced but a know issue is the inner tie rods if you have play in the steering its most likely the inners but I don't think they are available, I had the same at similar mileage so fitted a new rack.

The rack is not that bad to remove, and can be swapped over in a couple or three hours. If I remember the how to on here helped me out when I did mine. If i remember correctly, the replacement rack did not really seem any different, it was when I replaced the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column that connects to the rack that eliminated the slight play in my steering.
If you do take the rack out, I think you have to drop the rear mounts of the front subframe to give you enough room to get the rack out or at least on the nearside.
