Hi all. Never been here before, just found it so please be kind ๐Ÿ˜
I've just swapped my tf suspension for the soft ride shocks. Everything went well. But I'm having big doubts about the big bottom shock bolts, it says to torque them up to 100 nm. That doesn't seem very tight to me. It's the same as a wheel nut!!!!.ย
Have I miss understood something? People write about using a breaker bar etc on the bolt.ย
Any info and thoughts???ย

Hi and welcome to the forum

IMHO 100nm is plenty. More important is to make sure you fit the uprated lower bolts, Rimmer Bros do all 4 for a reasonable price. I have had both rears fail, first took out the CV boot, second took out the CV boot and a brand new tyre that had done 3 miles!

Hi James,ย
Thanks for your reply. I've had the car from new, never had any suspension work done on it and when I removed all 4 bolts they were perfect, no sign of damage, not bent or anything.ย
Did yours fail after having work done on the suspension??ย

Wheel nuts is 75 Nm. 100 Nm is a lot!. There are bolt torque charts on the internet, based on the bolt diameter and the grade of the bolt, helpful if you can't find the torque setting in the workshop manual.

Hi Mark, in my handbook, my wheel nuts for my 16 inch wheels should be tightened to 100 nm.ย

There was an advisory from MGR that revised the 16" wheel torque upwardsย  to 100nm.ย  I cant find the date of the advisory,ย  but consequently I've always torqued my wheels to 100nm regardless of wheel size. After all it is the same stud and nut.

There were some instances of wheels becoming loose at 70nm( probably down to inaccuracy in the torque wrencn) and I think the advisory was purely precautionary.ย ย

The uprated bolts, what's different about them? Are they tightened to a higher torque?
Should thread lock be used? MG rave for the TF doesn't mention it.ย

Pete

The car should have been recalled at some point to have the bolts replaced.

The recall was for the early TFs because of torque relaxation. Mine is an early 2005, MG Rover knew how to tighten the bolts at this point ๐Ÿ˜

Can I tighten them a bit more than specified? Just to make sure.ย
