I’ve been asked by one of our number about my adding audio controls on the steering wheel. Our friend wants to take the idea in a slightly different direction but many points are salient to his thoughts as they were to mine. We could sort this on a one to one basis but there might be others who would like to come along for the ride.
I’m going to try & put up a video of the finished job & if there are additional takers I’ll do it on the main pages.
It won’t be a how to, it’ll be a resume of how I approached the job, if you elect to use any of the ideas you are sailing on your own, I’m not coming along as crew.
Now let’s see if I can master the next step!

Could the file size be preventing the video from uploading?

It's the cage rattler again, just looked on the attachment thingy and it says max file size 9.9mb and it also gives permitted file extensions, so it may be one or both.
Isn't technology fun

Isn't technology fun, it's fer fer fer ferightening. I'm old enough to have pressed both button A & button B, studied thermionic valve theory, used Frank Castles log tables & watched my dad check his companies PDP8 computer with his slide rule. Therefore there might be good reason to excuse my deficiencies. I'll not try again, enough to say it's a moving picture taken in my car, with my phone of a radio, some fingers pushing buttons to make said radio change channels & go louder. I'm not at all sure what I'm fussing about.

Quick question, are you trying to get the pix up using a bastard phone?
Phones are a pain it the arse to do much on the internet with, as every bloody thing is in a different place and on some sites some of the features are just missing.
Better to use a real computer to do anything technical.

You my friend are correct. My first camera was a Kodak Brownie, I graduated through all sorts until I had a box full of cameras & lenses, until I dipped my toe into digital photography dampness, slowly loosing interest. Developing 35mm stock was expensive & you had to work hard to end up with a result to be proud of.
Press the digital button & flash of any number of images to choose the best isn’t in the same league as a well constructed optical shot. Hence the taking of a photograph has become devalued when everyone carries a very capable camera
I’ll dig out my digital dodah & use that from now on.

I got all excited when I saw the title....

I fitted Rover 45 steering wheel controls from a Connoisseur that had stereo controls and cruise controls. I had the audio side wired through an adaptor to my Kenwood head unit and the cruise control side to my cruise control ECU.

I have more recently upgraded my steering wheel to a horribly expensive one for a classic mini and haven't had the courage to fit them it, yet.

That’s interesting, which cruise control ECU did you use & what type of actuator is used on the throttle mechanism, is it a “locked in system” & what changes unlock it to return it to drive?
The adapter for your Kenwood; does it take the resistance change from the Rover controls & directly converter those valves into information understood by the head unit or did you have to modify the internal board.
I’m liaising with a chap who is doing what you seem to have done & as I’ve only fitted the audio controls, information on the cruise system would help him & possibly me in future.
Thanks. Mike

As with a lot of us I guess, I’ve been taking advantage of the weather, any excuse & I’ve been off. Fifty years ago my wife & I went to see Fleetwood Mac & fifty years later I’ve been given fifty years of Fleetwood Mac, best of & that had been travelling with us. “Go your own way” & we went.
The wheel mounted switches worked well, being able switch back to any one of those songs & to be able to play loud those that deserved just by flexing a finger & without taking your eyes off the road.
But that was it, up, down, next & back, I needed another two for mute & off. Whilst looking through the electronics parts section on eBay I found self adhesive tactile switches; cheap, easy to use & adaptable. I’ve not finalised the workings yet but initial test are positive.

And finally. Apart from the garish appearance of the tactile switches & their propensity to peel up at the edges; overcome with a couple of spots of adhesive, I have a satisfactory system. Once their position becomes second nature I'll disguise them with some textured vinyl & no one will be wiser.
