This may sound like a newbie question - I'm a newbie - how can I resolve the issue of the horn test not working?

If I turn the key the car immobiliser is on - I bought the unit to program the new fobs I have.

Cheers

Does the car have a 5AS or a Pektron alarm?

Dave has a 1996 MGF so it'll be 5AS and a 2002 MGTF which will be a Pektron.

Which car is causing the problem.

What other tests have you done on the horns?

Hi there, Sorry should have said. It's the 5AS unit on the 96 MGF

Plugged the unit in and everything went well but then running the horn test failed. I tried it with the ignition on and off.

The horn doesn't work from the horn button either but I was wondering if the immobiliser prevents this?

Do the horns work with the steering wheel buttons work?
Try earthing them.
Try applying 12v to one side of the horns and earth the other side.

Thanks, will try that.

I've also found a page detailing testing the horn so will be following this through - http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/HornFailure.html

That page isn't quite right for the MGF.

You will need to open the door to trigger the alarm, an alternative is to have the boot open when you set the alarm, leave it for a couple of minutes and then pull the bonnet release which should set the alarm off.

To separate the steering column cowling there are 3 screws underneath, then it is clipped together.

Thanks for that.

1) Check the fuse - Doh!!

Problem solved.

Yes I am that kind of idiot.:bang:

Anyway I now have a key fob that actually works on the car. Car doesn't start but hey, can't have everything.

If the fob opens the car it will also clear the immobiliser.

For anyone following the thread a new battery has resolved all issues. Fingers crossed that the suspension replacement will resolve this issue and (hopefully) MOT next week.
