Getting windows defender alert for new Pscan version

New version is throwing this error which Defender then quarantines!

Never had this before.  I've allowed it for now.

when I scan my c:/pscan.uk/ folder with Microsoft Defender, I get nothing.  I'm on a fully up to date Windows 11 laptop.

I provided generic advice before in this post and have corrected it subsequently as I've learned more. As an IT professional and having spoken with and now understood that Pscan is an enthusiast developed product, this will be a false positive.

Cheers :-)

Yeah I have a dedicated laptop for diagnostic purposes it's a little old, and obsolete, but it's does the job asked of it, and is expendable, it doesn't matter if I drop it or get it covered in filth and shit. it if dies I'll bin it and pull another one out of the cupboard full of old laptops I have.

As an IT professional, probably a false positive.

I'd say with any car related software, keep it to a specific laptop and don't use that laptop for anything sensitive like email or online banking, or even the internet if you can avoid it. then it doesn't really matter if there's something nasty in the software.

Cheers :-)
Your advice would be valid for running knock off software for cloned diagnostic products, and there are many.

However, pscan is an officially developed and up to date program, written by me.

I 100% guarantee that there's nothing dodgy in it and you absolutely can use it on the same laptop that you use for work, email, banking, whatever.

The software absolutely will not ever touch anything outside of the folder that you install it on, except in the following circumstances:-
The FTDI driver, which comes from a reputable company in Scotland.
If you select logging and choose another folder, then it will log to that other folder, because you told it to.

pscan doesn't even need admin rights to be installed or run.

The only caveat is, only ever download it from pscan.uk and not from anywhere else.

Hi Pscan!

I'm sorry, I knew nothing about your product or its provenance. I'm sorry to have implied however tangentially that it may not be trustworthy with my overcautious advice, which I'm sure is not the case based upon your reply and looking at your products and was certainly not my intention.

You're correct, most of my experience fixing these issues for people on other cars is from dodgy software obtained in dubious circumstances, which this clearly isn't in your case and for your product. My advice was generic, rather than specific and as such was provided from an IT security perspective rather than one of knowing the product in question. It's great to see an affordable and clearly well made aftermarket solution for such vehicles.

I'll edit the post above to reflect this accordingly, I'm new to this scene and had assumed Pscan was an official MG Rover tool tbh, that had become available somehow but hadn't done any research so didn't know it was the work of dedicated enthusiasts. Please accept my apology!

Thanks for your work, I'm sure I'll be a customer soon myself :-)

No need to change your post or apologise.
You said "car related software" which was clearly a a generic point, and I would say a valid one.  I didn't take it as any suggestion of doubt about pscan.
