But the VVC does NOT have a distributor cap!!! it's the MPi that has the cap. The VVC's leads go direct to the coils

Looking on the Rimmer Bros site shows two options for the VVC, up to 2000 has four HT leads, post 2000 with ECD3 you have the two lead set. A quick Google image search for VVC engines certainly shows examples with four HT leads going under the cover.

From the photograph you printed you can see four ht l leads it looks like it has distributor cap you should be able to pick thorse leads from good car spares shop

You may need a cap and rotor arm as well

Time for an update,

new leads arrived and they were too short, by a long way, even the longest lead wasnt long enough to go from the plug to the distributor. Heres what i think has happened, there are two different sets of 4 leads, one for VVC, the one i needed and one for non vvc engines, the one i received. The non VVC ones are shorter, so i managed to splice together two leads just to check it was the 4th one causing the problem and sure enough it was so she is up and running... well not really. as the lead has been bodged im now waiting to order a proper set of leads so i can replace all 4 with new vvc ones before i can really drive her again. Obviously the guy i bought them from was under the impression that vvc and non vvc ones were all the same so if your buying ones for a vvc please check the cables are very very long otherwise they wont fit. The leads need to go round the engine and then looking through the inspection hatch in the boot you can see where the leads connect near the bottom, i will take photos of this when i get the new leads but its possible to get your hand through to remove the old ones and fit new ones, i didnt have much of a problem with this.
