No connection with seller

Just seen this on ebay

2006 55 MG TF WITH GENUINE TURBO CONVERSION. THOUSANDS SPENT. A VERY RARE CAR!
Completed

Reading the ad this car has had a fortune spent on it but has not had an MOT since 2012 :-? , despite, apparently, having had over £2000 spent on engine work in 2013 and the engine smokes so won't pass an MOT :omg:

Anyone know the story behind this car?

Yea - I was reading up on this yesterday - all seems a bit odd. A few questions came to mind:

1. With so much money spent why is it smoking with no diagnosis?

2. Why did the previous owner get shot of it?

3. Why has it been off the road fro so long despite all that work in 2013?

It all points to a really big and expensive problem that was discovered during the 2013 work... I may be wrong, and just being pessimistic, but you don't do that much work and then just get rid of it!

NA = normally aspirated.

In other words someone's possibly just stuck a turbo kit on a standard 135. The big ends/ small ends/pistons and rings may not be up to the extra pressure, hence smoking engine.
Worn turbo seals tend to show as massive plumes of smoke on the overrun. ie When the turbo is still spinning fast but the engine requires no input. It causes a partial vacuum in the turbo and pulls a lot of oil past the worn seals.

Pity it started life as a MPI 135; to spend all that time and money on a non VVC 160 engine is ludicrous. The 160 base would have a better chance of standing up to the rigors of the turbo and the extra loads applied and give the engine a little more longevity, plus the end result would be more than the stated 180bhp

Anyway it will be interesting to see what it sells for, just as a standard 2006 TF with 72k must be worth over £2k.

You can get Turbo K series out of the 75 for sensible money...

But why aint loads of people dropping subframes and transplanting them into the F/TF?

Because its not that simple.. and more trouble than its worth for 180bhp..

Charge cooler.. extra engine bay heat.. manifolds to fabricate.. possibly have to move fuel tank..

Koos (XR3TF) is the only person I know whos run decent power in a turbo TF..

MJS have recently built one too.. but its no race car.. 240mm brakes all round still :omg:

There are better options than just smacking a turbo onto the original engine..

Someone will buy it.. strip it.. and I reckon put a 160 back in it.. and sell the engine as a going concern..

Sounds like a can of worms but credit the seller for honesty.
180 bhp For £7323 .A bit more would buy you a brand new rotrex C30 & chargecooler, big valve vvc head and low compression bottom end. Pop a Emerald and map on depending on forging the bottom end or not 190 to 260bhp

Live and let live each to their own and all that.
Personally i leave the turbos for the zrs I could have had this for £1600 last week with all the hard work done.Rarely come up for sale at this price with this work done.
Have some piper cams verniers in the shed decoded remapped ecu fuel regulator could have taken this 260 for under £2000.

Tony (tonestf) has spent less than that turbo thing and has 202.8bhp (mapped at Emerald HQ) on a 1.8..
