I'm really tempted to do this mod, but how does it look against the other 2 dials in the center console?

Nice to see you around Rayb. :)

They look like this against the other two dials Richard. Best I could do at short notice. :)

Just finished doing this myself and I'm surprised I've never done it before. I really like it!

I've just done mine too - I was a bit dubious about this at first as someone went to a lot of trouble to design that filter with all the little cut outs in the black and also I drive around here with no street lighting so I ldon't like the instruments to be too bright and distracting. However, if you exercise moderate care taking the filter out, the whole thing is reversible and it only took me 20 minutes taking it steadily (wheel left in - I just wiggled the cowl around it). The results in a blacked-out garage seem really good....the lighting is more even over the instruments than before especially the water temperature and fuel guage which previously always looked dim against the 2 bigger instruments. There is still plenty of 'dimming' left in the rheostat. So a 'free' upgrade. Thanks to everyone who has posted on this.

Richard

PS added an 'after' photo with the rheostat mostly down and the camera at -2 .0 EV and with the white balance adjusted for the lights.....this looks pretty close to what I'm seeing.

1.8i Mk2 Solar Red, 16 inch square spoke wheels, MGFMania hood with zip-in glass rear window, DRLs, Kmaps ECU, Pipercross panel air filter, MGOC Supersports back box & some cockpit bling

Thanks for the pic Richard. It's a good, reversible, cheap and easy enough upgrade mod to do, with real safety benefits, especially during these dark winter evenings. :broon:

Don't forget to take some pics 'before' and 'after' folks. :yesnod:

I've been looking for a way to improve the poor dial illumination.
This only took about 30 mins, and I didn't have to remove the steering wheel - just 10 screws and nothing unplugged.
Just be careful when twisting the console out of the way (to the left is best) as the cables for the mirrors & dimmer are a little tight.

Thanks for the "how To" - Just been out and done this - huge improvement!
