My MGB went up on the hoist today to install the new road/rally springs, install the lowering kit and new bushes and change the spline hubs for bolt ons, in preperation to fit my new solid wheels with my flash new competition tyres. I have managed to pick myself up a set of Performance Challenger wheels and am having Toyo R888 205/55/14's fitted. now all I have to do is put the new Flamethrower dizzy in, replace the fuel pump and replace the 1"1/2 SU's with the 1"3/4 HS6 SU's and all will be ready for the next track day on the 19th of Feb

Are the rims from an Australian company, Craig? Those rims look similar to the rims used on the last MGBs and also on the Triumph Stag. I think they also do replica Minilite and Wolfrace style rims It will look nice with these. If your axle is a wire wheel unit then it will be slightly narrower than a 4-stud axle so you might need spacers especially with the 205 tyres or have you got a Sebring wide arch kit?

Let me know how you get on with the Flame Thrower and please send me some pictures of your car with the wheels fitted, I would like to add a picture to my website (www.upgrades4mgs.co.uk) page on the wheel choices.

Is your engine tuned? Just asking because I have normally found a richer needle in the 1.5" SUs better than the 1.75" SUs which seem to run too rich and start to cause problems on standard engines, even with stage 2 heads.

Hi Martin, the rims are made by Performance Wheels in South Australia, the same company that do the Minilite replica "Superlite". We have made 13mm Spacers for the rear, unfortunately I don't have sebring wide arches so I still have to grind a bit off the lip on the guard.

As soon as the weather clears up, I'll take some shots for you and I'll let you know how the flamethrower goes.

As it will be some time before the 1.75" SU's and the new top end is built, I'm putting AAA needles in the 1.5" SU's to tide me over.

Cheers
Craig

Thanks for the update, Craig.

I ran AAA needles in HIF4s on mine along with the deep K&N filters and it certainly seemed to work well with that set-up.

I had 195/60x14 Pirelli P6's on my BGT back in the 80's. I had a disc rear axle but had to bend the lips up on the rear arches and pull the wings out slightly for clearance. You may be able to see it in the pic below.
I had a Pertronix cartridge in a stock distributor in the blown 1800 in my ZA and never had any problems with it. It is certainly "fit and forget". Just make sure that you have the polarity correct when fitting it as you can fry the unit if it is hooked up reversed.
Looking forward to seeing some pics of your B on the track! :broon:

As Rich says often just rolling the lip inside the wheel arches is enough with the MGB. They often have different clearences one side to the other at the back
Mine is typical, the LHS viewed from the back = nearside here in the UK has much less clearance. I have slighty oversize radials on wire wheels. They are 155 v the factory 145 from memory, I dont run low profiles on that car they are 82 section.
Those wheels look great, it will be great fun on track, a tweaked MGB can still give a good account of itself 50 years after its launch.

Once I have money to spend (and a house with a garage) I need to get a long term project like an MGB GT, GT6 or similar.

The lines of the older cars are just a class unto themselves and are hard to beat.

The MGB remains a great car, sporty and fun but easy to live with anf affordable.
If you can live with almost zero luggage space the MGA has fantastic looks, and sells for a lot more so you might mot lose too much on a rebuild. They also weigh less and have less drag so go better for an equal tune B series engine.
Now some MGA porn.

The green one is a twin cam, the red one has a cross flow ali head, both cars have the 5 speed gearbox conversion. The owner of the red one also has an LE500.
