Dunno if they're any good, but they do look nice.

One slight off-putter though is the so called "Special Offers" - in other words advertisements.
You pay £10 more to not receive these "Special Offers" - don't know how intrusive they night be?

"Special Offers, personalised for you, and Sponsored Screensavers
You'll receive special offers, personalised for you, and Sponsored Screensavers directly on your Kindle Fire HD - including offers on items like Kindle accessories or products from our digital catalogue of kindle books, apps, games and MP3, plus many more.
Your offers display on your Kindle's screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen-they don't interrupt you while you're using your Kindle Fire HD.
If you would like to opt out of these special offers and sponsored screensavers, you can do so for £10 after you have registered your device. Call our Customer Service team anytime."

You can't beat a genuine mid-life crisis...

I would get one due to the fact that if you really really want to you can install android on it and then your £129 investment becomes a iPad rival :)

I have just (Friday) bought a Google Nexus 7 that is very similar to the Fire HD but as its not got Amazons knobbled version of Android suits me better bet (me being a geek anyway). It has GPS so I am thinking of using it for a possible Digital Dash Concept (or to at least prove it can be done). Mine cost 169 quid and i Managed to blag a free case and copy of Norton (Norton will be going on ebay :))

TF160 - Mike Satur 4-2-1 manifold, Sports Cat, Quad Daytona, Z and F Tuning Phase 2 Remap showing 177Bhp @ Janspeed RR day and a Big Grin :D (oh and a glass rear screen and bits of shiny stuff)

Kindle Fire HD runs a modified version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. To run a different version of Android would require hacking the device and voiding the warranty

Be warned... Those very cheap ones break easily. I have 2 of them here with knackered power supplies. The power supplies cost over £10. Not worth it.

For me the Nexus 7 represents the best value if you don't want an iPad.

Nexus 7 has better build quality, however the iPad mini is tougher as a group of android fans discovered in a series of drop tests.

If your wanting to use things like torque, android is the way to go, but if you get a cheaper device (other than the nexus), don't expect great performance.

Avoid anything with a version of android less than 2.2 and ideally get something with 2.3 or above ( like the nexus)
