Inertia Switch - I'm assuming that the switch is on the top under the soft rubber covering, and that if it had tripped I would feel it push down? If so, it hasn't tripped - but I have pushed down anyway, just to be sure.

Fuses - pulled all fuses under the bonnet and in the passenger compartment - all look fine (wish I'd got the glow ones!!)

Is there a separate (inline) fuse for the fuel pump, as there is a off -white thing that looks like it could be that, just underneath the inertia switch??

I've checked all connections and all clean and tight, although I will redo the solenoid ones once I have solved this (but starter turning at moment so not urgent)

Fuel Pump - when I switch Ignition on I can hear a whirring noise for a few seconds - I'm assuming this is fuel pump priming?

Lastly - lovely offer GroovyLee - but it is a heck of a drive from Bedfordshire to Kent. I don't have a garage with light and power, and therefore if you really wanted to do this tomorrow would be better than tonight!! Also, when you say black box behind the ECU - do I have to take off the ECU to get at this?

Hmmm, doesn't sound like the black box behind the ecu. Is your alarm behaving normally? Could it be immobilised?

Unfortunately I can't do tomorrow John, as I'm going to my best mates house in Worcester for a couple of days.

If you still haven't got it sorted by Tuesday though, I have the entire day to myself, and will happily come down for some tinkering :broon:

Thanks - hadn't thought of that one! Only used it so far to sort engine management light and oxygen sensors :broon:

Thanks for all the suggestions :hugs: - have to say I'm giving up for tonight - too cold and starting to get damp again! :pinch: Will get back onto it tomorrow.

OBD scanners will only tend to show up sensor problems, which mostly will let the engine run albeit in limp home mode.

Start with the simples first.....

Check your fuel pump.
Check your ignition (ie plugs firing).

Work back from there.

If it was working before I would concentrate around where you have recently disturbed or worked. Has the connection to the crank sensor been disturbed or the ecu?
I dont think the TFs have the relays behind the ecu. Mine don't.

John,

This doesn't sound like a single fault...the starter motor issue (now resolved??) sounds like a typical solenoid issue (jammed maybe) to me given that your battery has juice. You've already had a hint about the immobliser - if you have a spare key/fob try that and see whether it will fire.

Just to make you feel marginally better, I took the bumper off the MG F today then removed the headlights. I had one stripped screw on the bumper which I managed to remove with pliers...on the MG F the headlights have 3 fixing points and the outer ones are prone to have rusty scews...well the driver's side wasn't even connected to the car (a small rusty screw is still attached to the light fitting) while the nearside looked fine but one twist promptly destroyed the plastic mounting (I'm still trying to remove the remanants from the car but gave up when it got dark). So tomorrow I will strip the lights to see if I can extract the reflectors for reslivering without destroying anything else....if 'yes' it still makes financial sense to proceed (acquiring another carcas for the near side)...if 'no' it may turn out cheaper to buy 2 new lights.....the reslivering of both reflectors costs the same as one new light via eBay. Anyway, it's blown my Christmas budget either way that I had intended to spend on a coolant level alarm. The only good news at my end is that it was dry today (no grit left on the roads) so I had a good blast with the roof down before making the car unroadworthy!

The immobilizer will prevent the starter cranking the engine, plus it alarms in the cabin - like a quiet police car.

Didn't realise that it wouldn't crank - thanks for the info.

Thanks for the thoughts Clive :broon: However, adding rear mudflaps and changing the passenger side headlight were the only bits of work I did prior to it stopping working. Hardly the sort of work that causes these problems! :nonod: . . . .or at least I wouldn't have thought so :-?

Richard, thanks for the support - sorry to hear that you are having problems too! :(

Having heard from David that immobiliser is highly unlikely to be the issue (and the alarm system appears to be working as it should) I'm going to start again with basics tomorrow. Oxygen, fuel, compression and spark! Pretty certain air isn't an issue, and I have listened to the fuel pump priming the system, so going to remove a spark plug or two tomorrow, and see if there is any sign of life!!

Lee - thanks again! What a star! :yesnod:

Unfortunately, if I don't get it sorted tomorrow, it's going to have to wait until next weekend - working all week! :(

I could pop down tomorrow if that's any help, no expert but two heads... etc

If nothing else it would be a car to jump start from to hand

Just one thought, I assume there's plenty of fuel in it?
