I was talking with a guy yesterday and he told me about a TF problem he had. The remote opened the door with no alarm so he thought ok, but it wouldnt start. Went through the usuals no joy. As a last hope he opened the key fob and found 1 of the 3 prongs holding the battery had snapped off. Re soldered and started no probs. Worth a look. I should say if you do need to solder be careful of the size of the iron you use, you dont want to damage components with too much heat. Especially if its your only fob.

Just added be careful of how much/long you apply heat as it can damage components.

Thanks everyone and especially big thanks to Lee (Groovylee) and Paul (smithp25)! :broon: :hugs:

We checked for spark: check :broon:
We checked for fuel: check :broon:
We changed batteries: check :broon:
We changed spark plugs: check :broon:

We had a cuppa and a think :yesnod:

Still no sign of life - engine turning over - but no life! :-?
We checked that engine was actually turning by putting into gear and trying to start: check :broon:
We eased back the cam belt cover to check that it hadn't broken: check

We tried turning the engine over - and the cam belt didn't move

Russell - where are you

OK we didn't mend it - recognised that this was a job for the professional, so Russell will be getting a call to do the job when he can fit me in. What we did do was logically work our way to a solution with the benefit of 3 brains rather than 1 going around in circles!!

Thanks Guys - you are stars :hugs:

That can only mean that the crank pulley is loose, I think.

Not a problem John. nice to meet you and Paul in the flesh, just a shame that it wasn't with some better news at the end.

As john says above, the crank pulley is turning, as the alternator belt was turning when the engine turned over. my thoughts would be one of the following:

1. tensioner has failed, and the crank pulley is not engaging the belt due to it being too slack
2. water pump has failed leading to the same symptoms as above, or
3. cambelt has failed near the crank pulley, and therefore isn't turning with the crank.

either way, not great, but at least we know what it is :pinch: :yesnod:

in other news, not wanting to be left out, my F overheated on the way home :nonod: and my windstop snapped :nonod:

will throw up another thread so i don't clog yours up John :broon:

A man after my own heart, I spend much of my day getting annoyed with the "computer says xxx" or "computer says its all okay" attitude, OBD is useful as a guide, but it's no good for this sort of fault really!

A tip for all for possible starter motor faults:

Crank the engine with the lights turned on, if the lights dim then the starter is drawing current so it's either a charge fault or the starter is jammed.

If the lights don't dim, then it's most likely to be a wiring fault.

Regards,
Andy

Lee - sorry to hear that :omg: Hope no lasting damage (to engine - recognise the windstop may be beyond repair). I know you had plenty of oil in your boot :bust: hope you had some coolant too :broon:

Once again, many thanks for your help - really appreciated, and it was really good to meet up with you. :yesnod:
