The captain of the Costa Concordia had a good go.........

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..

I'm the son of a Royal Marine and a Wren, with an ex-Army sister and soon to retire Army bro-in-law, I might be a bit biased but the boys and girls in green win :)

Would the loadmaster manning the mini-gun in the door of a Chinook not be classed as frontline by the RAF? Because aren't they usually NCOs?

My grandad 'rip' was a Sergeant in the parachute regiment, joined the British army at 15 after walking up from Wicklow in Ireland and eventually parachuted into Arnhem during WW2 without so much as a scratch. He had more medals than Kenny Everett.

The next day, a German sniper caught a glimpse of his mirror glinting as he shaved and promptly shot him in the a$$!

When I was 16, me and my good lady (we've been together all this time) were coming back from town on the bus when she looked over at a local pub carpark and said chortling "Isn't that your grandad over there?"

Looking over towards the pub, I saw him with his trousers down pointing at the bullet hole in his butt about to have a punch up with 3 [strike]guys[/strike] other drunken bums who were taking the 'mick' out of him. Their mistake, as he was hard as nails as you'd imagine. At 16, I nearly died of embaressment on that bus ride. A different era as it was then, he was always fighting with some bugger or other. What with all the cameras he'd be in jail nowadays. No doubt about it.

But I'm proud of him to this day and, banter aside, I'm proud of all our armed services and all the service personnel in the western world that serve in the east keeping us safe from harm by terrorists [strike]and the oil flowing.[/strike] :broon:

Last time I checked the Taliban didn't have an airforce.....

To that end being an officer in a jet is probably the safest place to be, and therefore I cant find it in me to call him a soldier.

Not when you have lads on the ground engaging in fixed bayonets, hand to hand fighting through the compounds.

I was in the area when an Apache crew single handedly rescued a couple of lads after a withdrawl. They flew in, pilot got out whilst gunner gave support, pilot strapped 2 lads to the outside of the helo and flew them back.
If the gunner had pointed his weapon at the deck at any point whilst firing the force of it would have flipped the whole helo.

Pilot was up before a tribunal in order to explain why he had put 29 million pounds worth of equipment in danger......

Now that, is support, I stand by what I said, would take an Apache in close support anyday over an officer having a jolly in a jet.

The Apache is a great close air support/tank buster platform - no doubt about it in my mind. First worked with them in Germany (US Army) on their first European deployment around 1988. I've also worked with the Blackbird in your signature area - hard to imagine 2 more different aircraft and both excellent at what they did/do.

Anyway, while this whole topic is a bit of fun the reality for the last 30 years is that the British Forces undertake joint operations and work to the various strengths of the team from all the services (unless you are in a submarine of course!).

I have to admit that I find your standpoint a little simplistic and a little sad Luckymarine. While everyone else is having a bit of a laugh you seem to be looking down on pilots who risk their lives evey time they go out. I think you miss the point really which is bravery comes from the person and not which arm of the forces they come from.
