Dave,

£1500 can buy a lot of F/TF, there are cracking cars out there for that money looking for a good home. I would think you can save yourself on the purchase price to offset the minor differences in Insurance costs. As to overall running costs, assume no real differences as its how you drive a car that determines the rate of fuel consumption and the deterioration of components. To "up-spec" could be enjoyable but ultimately quite costly as you will have to declare any mods to your insurance company, which gives them Carte Blanche to stiff you on the premium, without considering the cost of buying goodies.

Have a word with ConsettPhil he's selling his F. That car has had a load of time and effort spent on it and I suspect it'll be less money than that. It's even got a leather T bar!

I see the 'All Silver' front end where the fog lights should be on a 135 / 160...would that normally indicate a front end repair/respray?

I would hold out for a 135 at least. The insurance isn't going to be that much more and the convenience of the extras would outweigh the small increase (if any).

Whatever you decide, enjoy your choice and get out and drive it! :broon:

Sorry, I think we are talking at cross purposes, I meant that the black mirrors denote 115.
The all silver front end could indeed mean a front end respray, but I think they also produced some cars like that too.

Thanks - I didn't know that. Always just thought it was a lazy mans front end respray and they couldn't be bothered to mask off / take out the black plastics.

OK, so here's the deal. I have been keeping a weather eye on eBay and Auto Trader for probably close to a year. So far, any "possibles" have been either too expensive or geographically too far away. The average selling price of what looks reasonable to me TFs runs at about £2500, on both eBay and AT. Are there other places I should be looking, because I really want to spend not much more than a grand? I love this Forum because of the breadth and depth of knowledge, and I can feel people trying to steer me gently away from making mistakes. I don't honestly know anything about the differences between the F and the TF bar age.

I think that I am going to let the silver TF slide by though - you guys have made me look at it again, and the appeal has gone. And that saves me a fruitless drive to Morecambe, I guess.

Still confused though. The car will be doing low mileage driving from home to uni and so on, probably not more than 2K per year. I just want one because they look cool and I have wanted one since I first saw them. Oy vey.

Ain't it funny, how time slips away...?

Just got a call that the TF passed its MOT with no advisories. Why does life have to be so complicated for wannabe TF owners??? :bust:

Back to eBay and AT....

Rather than AT & the bay, I'd now be more tempted to have a look at the cars members on here or other MG forums had for sale as you know they are going to be well loved and cared for.

Good luck and happy hunting whatever you choose - you'll know 'the right one' when it comes along. ;)

Also check out MGCC/MGOC members cars for sale.

It will be all right in the end. If it isn't all right yet, then it is not yet the end..
