Lotus Cortina time for me with 77-79 Spitfires

I was too young to drive till the late 70's, but I still think that there were some great cars came out of the decade. I don't know much about "super cars" but cars which "ordinary folks" could afford were just great - Triumph Spits, Cortinas, Zephyrs, Rovers, Mk1 Escorts (I finally got one in 1979), Fiat 125 Scorpion, and so many other great iconic vehicles.

I saw a lovely yellow Triumph Spitfire 1500 today, top down, driver with big grin! :yesnod:

Speaking as one who was a teenager in the 70's and reached 21 in 77, by and large it was pretty crap IMO.
Apart from the prog rock: that was good. And still is! :broon:

Some fine cars, but many dogs as well: BL at their absolute worst. Allegro anyone? Austin Princess?
Even the Moggy Minor made it into the 70's. All the way from the 50's.

Or how about the legendary Flying Pig: the Mk 4 Ford Zodiac. Or the rise of Eastern bloc crappy imports.

I turned 21 in 1980. But then, I also lived in South Africa at the time. I just remember the ones that I liked. And certainly commie crap like the Lada never made it to SA. But we did have the Valiant, Impalas and lots of other US derived cars - big engines, thirsty as a miner on overtime, but you couldn't beat them for a night at the drive in. I think fourteen university students was our record. And four of them were in the boot!!!! I guess it depended on what you did in your cars back then, for fun, John. :broon:

Prog rock - twenty minutes of pentatonic scale in the middle of mediocre lyrics - nah, not for me, then or now. Thank God Clapton can't concentrate for more than six or seven minutes nowadays. :yesnod:

Yes but we also had the ford RSs TVRs Morgan's Spitfire's etc

To say nothing of the Alfa Giuliettas, Renault Gordinis, and Alfa Spyders... :yesnod:

Nowt wrong with a Lada, my dad bought one brand new in 1977, I learnt to drive in it follwed by both my sisters, we scrapped it 10 years and 100k later.

The Lada was just a Fiat 124 with a Russian badge, wasn't it?

Basically yes - but was made of heavier gauge steel.

Back then my local taxi back home from the pub was a Lada.
It had done over 200k but can't remember if MOT's were needed then
