Frequent or infrequent use?

Frequent or infrequent use? was created by Paiceybaby

So, winter is soon upon us it seems so I ask a question, a lot of us by the F/Tf for weekend use but some buy for everyday use. Which is better for our cars? What do you use yours for? Do our cars prefer frequent use to keep everything ticking along or do we keep them longer lasting by not using them so much??

From my experience regular use seems to keep a lot of the common problems at bay. ie The sticking clutch arm, seized handbrake, dodgy brakes, electrical weirdness, interior mould garden etc

Consciously try to rotate all my cars use so the MGF gets a run every few days all year around, obviously in summer its in constant use. Leave it for a week or so of none use and the F feels 1/2 asleep for the first 10 mls. I believe these cars like to be driven and perform best with regular use, ( without getting into the battery condition, tyres with flatspots, rusting brakes, yippy petrol, damp etc.etc. debate).

My mate has an F which he uses now and then when the weather is nice, which is cool but I like to use mine as much as possible, I also believe that frequent use keeps nasties at bay a little even if it is at the expense of more wear and tear.

Ours is Sue's daily driver Mon to Fri, both of us out and about Sat and Sun to varying degrees from popping to the shops through runs out to see friends and family to Dover/ Belgium and return runs.

There to be used. :broon:

I support the use regularly approach too but I do moderate my own approach in Highland winters mainly because of all the salt on the roads - it's already started up here. If I'm not driving the car for a week or so it gets a push in and out of the garage to keep a few bits moving. I chock the car in the garage rather than using the handbrake and will sit in it and depress the clutch etc. Generally I don't start it as it probably does more damage to start the engine and then not warm it up properly. The battery gets a trickle charge if the car is not run for a fortnight.

I agree with John n Sue, use mine as regular transport, occasionally Julie will ditch her comfy warm 'Pug 307' n use 'Myfanwy' to keep 'Pugs' mileage down, cheeky mare. :omg: ...LOL

I even had the roof down today, bit nippy mind. I do think that whilst it's running well I shall make best use of it lol I work out in the middle of nowhere where the roads are terrible and it really shows the crashy suspension up, makes me worry it will break lol so I just go slowly. It's a lovely car to drive though, who needs a spine and kidneys anyway lol

Said I would put mine in the garage and not us it until next summer but it's been out every week end and like you was out with the roof down today windows up though and heater on only my head was cold should of wore a cap lol
Only thing I don't want to do is get road salt underneath it as only got a single garage and sloping drive which is my draw back as would love to be doing bits of work on it even if it don't need anything doing touch wood. Gets a bit boring just constantly polishing the body work and alloy wheels  :woowoo:

Gave ours a hot soapy wash today: the poor little thing was more brown than blue. Absolutely glopped.

She's now ready to do it all again next week. :yesnod:
