Are you sure the car alarm is setting?

The red led is flashing on the dash, but when I set the alarm I opened the boot no alarm but indicators flashed then when slamming the boot horn started going ???? I seem to be having lots of electrical gremlins after leaving her stand.

I would suspect a dodgy wire in the boot hinge loom. :yesnod:
Normal alarm function should allow you to open the boot while the alarm is set. Closing the boot should trigger the indicators to flash to show the alarm is still set.
Sometimes a dodgy wire in that loom causes the alarm to sound when the boot is opened, so it does appear to be a similar fault.

David, my 09/96 mpi does not flash the indicators when closing the boot with alarm set, but flashing led on dash shows alarm has reset. I would put money on a broken wire in the boot loom or a bad earth on the gearbox to bulkhead earth connection.

Definitely a broken wire in the loom. :yesnod:
Probably more than one, tbh.

the wires get bent back and forward and eventually break. You can get all sorts of issues with wires cross connecting. Free the loom from the hinge and open it up. Be prepared for a lot of broken wires. I soldered in extra length on all the wires and ensured they wouldn't be bent at sharp angles.
