In early 1980 I left mechanicing to move to Scotland to work as Stalker/Keeper for private forestry. I had been in to shooting since I got my first Diana Mod 15 air rifle when I was a kid.
I had worked on Tong St. In Bradford and half a mile up the road was a main Ford dealer.
This pic of the trees was once prime grouse moor and when I worked on the land there were no trees planted then. The land was split in to Lots and sold to some very famous people for tax incentives.
In August of that year the owners of the plots were invited to come up and have a days grouse shooting. It was 7500 acres of moor and about the tree line shown there is still a row of grouse butts built in the 1800's. I had to fight tooth and nail to stop them ploughing them up.
Driving grouse became the highlight of my year until eventually the ploughing destroyed the habitat.
I got taken back to that day very clearly as I pondered that day.
The owners were not shooting men and most had borrowed shotguns. I sat above the butts with my flag as a flanker and I had a little clicker and I counted the shots on that first drive. 117 shots for 5 grouse. The Beaters were hearing the shooting and were underwhelmed with the outcome.
Here's the poignant part..
The Ford Dealer was C D Bramall of Bradford and the owners were there on that day..from a garage I once drove past every day on my way to work.
Since that day the trees have grown and 40 years later are being harvested.
It has been a long time since I drove up what was once a regular road and also home to the Durriss Hillclimb and as I drove up to the top I saw a sign I had never seen before..
And what made it even more poignant was my car..and where it came from..
It's a small world..I wonder if any descendants have an MG..and may read this.
Moving to Scotland was a huge step for a boy from Bradford and I narrowly missed the wool Mill at the bottom of our street.

Now it’s family that keeps us here, anyway we’re too old to move & I wouldn’t be able to create garage, stores or workshops in enough time to enjoy the move.

I only returned to visit parents and they are long gone now.
For me it just shows the start of Life's journey and where it may well end.

You can just see the top of the 19th century church. It still holds 3 or 4 services a year and is beautiful inside.

I fixed you the pictures.I have no idea why the text about the church didn't appear..or the church pic didn't attach to the main body. This forum fights back!

Parked outside the Fife Arms was this delightful Ferrari with a great number plate.
I offered to part ex my van for it but he said he couldn't raise the money to make the deal.

I waived and shouted out "Yeah..nice car!"
He looked at me like I was crazy then I realised I was on my mountain bike.
