Spot on info, I change oil at least every second year to prevent sludge buildup, especially important with the modded gearbox.Bryan Young;16076 wrote: According to the maker, ZF gearboxes, the fluid should be changed every 45,000 kilometers or 28,000 miles ~ the ONLY fluid to use is ESSO EZL 799 CVT FLUID and you need 5 litres, not cheap, i understand that it is around £12 a litre and may be difficult to find (BMW dealers usually have it because its also used on the Mini) Absolutely nothing else must be used otherwise gearbox failure will occour in a short time.

Quicksilver;16001 wrote: Likely its oil level related but could simply be some water in the system, try taking it for a long run 50 miles + using either sports mode or manual shift to keep the revs up and get the gearbox temp up, in my experience of stepspeeds this can clear a number of apparent faults.

You will be pleased to know that Esmeralda has had her Steptronic gearbox oil changed and the problem has been completely resolved, her owner said its "just like new" correct fluid was used. just goes to show how vital the fluid is to this gearbox, thank you very much for your advice.:yesnod:

We tend to neglect the fluids etc in the car, but it shows what can happen.
