MGTF Suspension

Hi quite a while ago I raised the question why the suspension on the my mg was so bad. Please can anyone advise me if they have bought new dampers from another manufacturer to improve the ride quality and if they can recommend a website I could visit to look at prices.

Currently I can see Spax are selling each damper at £124.00 each, does anyone know if I can buy these or similar cheaper?

I do know that the later TFs had a much improved suspension layout, that was a lot more forgiving of bad roads.

Maybe not, as I don't think the suspension is bad.
I think VHS do a package.

I too think that the TFs suspension is much harsher than the F in standard form, as a passenger in two different TFs i found the ride hard and bumpy on poor roads. the new LE 500 and latest TF 135 have the Blistien shock absorbers that MG Rover refused to fit because of cost, and these later cars have an excellent ride.

All, thanks very much for your advice, I wondered if it would improve by adding more gas as I believe this is what is used on the current suspension??

You cannot add gas to the suspension on a TF ! it is the MGF that had the hydrogas system which was stolen from the Metro. there are various upgrade packages for the suspension on the MGTF. The VHS package uses the Bilstein dampers which are excellent and are now being used on the latest models of TF. The package costs around £565.00 plus carriage. Have a look at their website. most of the packages that are available, Gaz, Spax, Monroe are about the same price, i would opt for the VHS one. David A or CJJ will be able to give your more advice, i would say dont buy cheap as you may end up in the same situation. another thing that can affect the ride is tyres! are they the correct ones for the car and are they being run at the correct pressures?

Our Tf is a very rattly affair when i go over rough ground I live on a farm and the track is great for tractors etc but the TF dont likeit at all.I have had it on the jack and tried all things to find what sounds like a ball joint or similar but no play found.Tried the lower wishbones etc and still no play.the drop links are a little perished but still not loose to cause anythng major.
Any body got ideas as to check for ilusive play whilst in the air or on the ground?Maybe its just me and the TF are hard and noisey on rough tracks.I havent any thing to compare with only a friend who has a F with hydro whatever and his is like a limo in comparison>

You also need to eliminate noises from the body/doors/interior/hood frame/ loose battery, et al.:dunno:
We had a rattly, clonky noise that turned out to be a loose window mechanism in the passenger door.:yesnod:

Just got my July Enjoying MG (monthly mag for MG Owners Club) they are adverterising a MGTF suspension comfort pack which is in stock and is £561.90, takes about three hours to fit. it uses the same BILSTEIN units that VHS supply. Mine being the Mysteries of the TF
On my quest for the illusive rattles on my car I checked over the suspension again n couldnt find raelly any thing major,except noticed the drop link bushes were a little perished so decided to change them whilst i was in the swing of things.
The first one I looked at was rusted solid on the lower bolt which turned out to be a job for the hack saw as the only way to remove it to change it out .
I visited the local motor factors who said this is the one and gave me what he had seen on his screen.
No no wasnt the right one as mine was a pressed steel effort with two bushes fixed top and bottom.
On re visit he was confused as the one shown wasnt the ones i needed
Looks like mg rover changed the type in 2003 and forgot to tell any one really except I guess the genuine rover people,this also is the same for the rear links too as the ones supplied by the factors etc are about 25mm or 1 inch shorter.
Just goes to show things are not all they seem and I have since sourced my new ones from a great set of guys in Cumbria who were more than helpfull.Hasten to add also my rattles are still there .

Right. Yeah, woohoo for Cumbria, boohoo for the rattles.

Nice new drop links,looks pretty but still got noise more like a creak,
Rear trailing arm to check next and ideas,
looks to be a ;ot of movement in it but cant see how to release it to check it
