Whats this 'reed' thing then?

To see if yours has ABS, open the bonnet and on the left hand side looking in there will/should/could be a silver box looking thing, with pipes going to it...

Shouldn't that be legs....................

My MK1 does, the warning light keeps coming on because a rear caliper is sticking.

I know where the ABS would be and it isn't fitted to mine, or PAS.

So any ideas how I get a speed pulse please?

Whether it has EPAS or not, if the model year had EPAS the chances are all cars would have the sensor.

OK after a bit more internet trawling I think the speed pulse is generated by what is commonly called a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in the U.S. or wheel speed sensor although I think the correct parlence in the UK is an ABS sensor

I don't know if these would be fitted but, if this is the right part, gettin one from a breakers would be easy - ther's 30+ auctions on eBay.

Does this sound right?

A reed switch is one triggered, either opened or closed, by a magnet.
They are common in building alarm systems or where a moving object needs to trigger a signal.

I very much doubt most of the wiring will be there for ABS on a non ABS model but if the F used wheel sensors I expect there will be most of the mounting hard wear.

Do you know if the feed to the unit has any voltage, if so you could use a reed switch mounted near one of the hubs with a suitable trigger on the hub.

I'm not sure a reed switch would be suitable for a speed pulse as they are too slow to react. Most systems use a hall effect sensor to produce a pulse.

The rings on the wheels for ABS are more slip sensors than speed pulse sensors, as they detect when a wheel is going slower than the rest of the car.

I'm sure you can buy aftermarket speed sensors if you don't have one fitted.

I would say a hall effect sensor picking up a pulse from a neobidium magnet superglued to one of the halfshafts would do it.

This might be of interest too
