So it was decision time as to which one to sell,I came to the conclusion to sell both and get myself another MGf or Tf this time I will be going for a manual box ,maybe even a trophy.I feel I know these cars quite well now
Unfortunately I have lost a little faith in the stepspeed.
Now I'm trying to get the broken steptronic box apart to see what went wrong........
the mgf is on ebay as we speak item number 180658283430 fingers crossed.......

your how to on subframe removal was very helpful (altough it nearly put me of when I realised what a big job it was)
Your how to on bleeding the cooling system was also a big help..
Thanks very much to you for those.

Conclusion:The bearing on the pinion shaft seems to have broken up and the loose hardened bearing rollers have smashed there way through the cog and the outer casing.

judging by the mashed up casing where the bearing lived ,I think it's possible the bearings went before and the new one wasn't seated very well.
What little oil was left in there (most of it is in Focus DIY's car park) still looked like new .Wonder if I can get another pinion/transfer drive gear/shaft to repair it.

That doesn't sound very proficient by the 'MG Specialist' Unless they were instructed by the car owner to only replace the bearings despite damage to pinion/transfer shaft...
