Change Speedo Head Cluster from MK1 to MK2

Change Speedo Head Cluster from MK1 to MK2 was created by Schoppi

Hello I am new on this MGF forum , but got aware that here are a lot of specialists which probably can help me.

I would like to exchange the speedo head cluster from my MGF MK1 (mechanical speedometer) to the once from the MK2 (with the digital speedometer). I bought the MK2 unit including the cables from the cluster to the plug point behind the dashboard. I also have the impulse sensor which will be fixed at the gear box (3 cables).
To get a better understanding about the differences I compared the colors of the plug wires and also study the wire schematics. At the connectors I found some minor deviations.

Is there someone who did this exchange before or can someone give me some hints what I have to consider?
Must I exchange other parts as well?

Before I start working I would like to have a cle

ar view.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi David,

that sounds optimistically :woohoo:

In the German forum it looks like nobody had done this before.

So far I have found this

You will need a speedo transducer (the part onto the top of the gearbox that converts the gearbox speedo into a digital signal. Then you need to supply power to it by taking a feed from the black and pink wire from the ECU loom to the transducer. Then take an orange a white wire from the transducer to the back of the clocks. I think the 3rd pin in the transducer plug is either earth or not used. Hey presto a working speedo! The rev counters are all the same!

I did it! :woohoo:

The new MK2 Speedo is assembled and works proper. The only fail function I have is that the lamp for the ABS system is lighting. The ABS System is working; I tested it on a wet street.
Right now I disassembled the lamp, but this should not be the final solution.

Photos from the assembly you can find attached.

Great news, mate!

As for the Abs light, if the system is working but the light is coming on it would suggest a simple electrical fault in the warning light circuit.

I will upload your photos so that we can all see them.:broon: Would you like to add some titles to them?

Hi David,

OK, no problem.
I gave each picture a title. Also you can find a PDF-documents which describes the differences between the MK1 and MK2 plugs at the fuse box site.

This is a great mod!
Something else to add to my list.
One question; Does the replacement speedo head carry the total mileage (from it's previous car) in it's memory,
and is it possible to input your car's proper mileage into it?

The speedo unit retains the mileage, and I don't think it is possible to change it.

If you had a friend with a fully wired car that takes a mark two set of clocks you could change the mileage with the right connector and software from ebay, I'm just not sure the software would do it on a retro fit

To adjust the speedo to the original kilometers will be one of the next actions. Due to the fact that I will be fair-minded also to myself, I will do it soon. I documented the kilometers of both units so that I can adjust it at any time when I have found the way out, especially for my modified version. ;)
