I don't think the newer Fiat 500 is too far from the original design. But yes, the mini is way bigger. I recall guarding it closely at the research and development unit at Longbridge (I ran the Rover guard dog section of their company protection services way back then) and I thought that it was gorgeous in 1995. But easily as big as a golf. Still, that's the need for airbags, abs, aircon.. etc I suppose.

It's a very popular car, a great car with a nippy engine. It's not a 'mini' as we know it. But it could have been a whole lot worse. :whistle:

Fiat 500 ... brings back memories. My mate's aunt had one and passing her house in a 'happy' mood one night we physically lifted it into such a position in her drive (90 degrees) that it couldnt be driven backwards or forwards.
Apparently, she was not amused the next morning.

I was almost sick when I saw them! Plus they suggest it is an 'MG - a - like' sporty coupé!!!

My wife thinks that Mini coupe looks "pieced together" and she usually doesn't comment on car looks.
A few weeks ago we were behind a new Fiat 500 in yhe MGF and were surprised just how big it was.
I do have to admit that the Abarth Ferrari commerative 500 with 180hp looks like a lot of fun.
Unfortunately at the list price only Ferrari owners will be buying them!

According to TG last night the designers of the Mini Coupe say that the roof is based on a backwards baseball cap. :blink:

BMW are trying to turn Mini from a single car into a whole brand that sits below the BMW range but all they are doing is killing it. Not trying to be jingoistic but the Countryman is not even made in Britain.

I had a 2004 BMW Mini Cooper S and it was a great car. We drove 2000 miles around Europe in it on honeymoon and so it will always be special to me and my Mrs but there's no way we'd get another Mini now.

I have to say that as far as I am concerned a Mini stopped being a real Mini when BMW essentially deliberately scuppered MGR just to grab it and take it to Germany!

It may have been designed in 1959 but I think that is where its beauty lay. Simplicity, road holding like a crate on glue wheels, decent amount of space inside.. and most if all FUN! Everyone from the poorest of the poor to the richest of the rich loved them. Now they are 'just another small car'.
