Bryan,
those are Larry's(Laz1957) photos, with my notes attached, This is the backend of the car under the engine area, as Pete says.
The bellcrank is at the other end of the gear cables from the gear lever.

Thank you, all is clear now. that looks like new cables are needed and would seem sensible to fir the uprated bell crank from Mike Satur, dont want to be doing this job again in too much of a hurry. I understand that the new cables from Portland Trading have an adjustment to "tighten" up slack?? they are £130 a pair or £70 each plus carriage, from them direct.

Would someone be kind enough to post a picture of how this should look, so I can see what's wrong with mine please?
Looks like new cables required then?

Here's a link to Portland Trading's page on the MGF cables. They have good pics of how the cable ends should look.
By the time mine failed they looked nothing like these! There is also a bellcrank incorporated in the shifter mechanism itself. It has a nylon bushing that could cause major problems if it fails but I don't know if they ever do. It sure looks like a part that would benefit from an occasional application of grease. Speaking of the gearchange, do the cables at the front end just snap on and off of the balls? EDIT: Yes they do.
