For me it has to be Nina Simone.

For a tune started in 1965, its that old, its become a classic. However after all the work is complete, it only takes a little effort to add a little.

Take Roy Orbison`s "I drove all night" , one of my favourite driving songs,
Then listen to Celine Dion ( only if you have to ) and Cyndi Lauper trying at best to make a cover version. Nope, I would have a hard time driving to those versions.

To make any sort of impression the latest artist has to give the song a complete make over, to the point were the original is unrecognisable, as an example Joe Cockers version of the Beatles " Get by with a little help from my friends" Now that how to cover a song !!!
