On some cars the filter is in a bastard of a place and it's almost impossible to get a descent grip of the filter with you hand, the you have to use a filter wrench, but only tighten to @ the same force as you'd be able to do with your hands.
My Ford has the filter in such a bloody hard to get at place, you can't get a hand near it, I have to use a cup type filter wrench, a socket extension and ratchet to deal with it.

Had great problems, too, when I changed the oil filter first time. Bought several tools which didn't help :-? . At the end I went to a mechanic: he lifted the car up and used a huge pipe wrench to remove this bastard of an oil filter - it looked so easy.

I've never had good luck with those cup wrenches, and with aircon, the two aircon pipes are in the way at the end of the oil filter. What I have been using with great success is one of these strap wrenches.

when using a fluted filter cup on a ratchet and extension bar you would expect there to be a tourque setting so you apply the exact amount of preasure.............lets face it when mg rover made our cars i cant imagine somebody showing a new trainee how to screw a oil filter on using a old rule of thumb lets say screw the filter up and then quarter of a turn.......they would of used a filter cup............after screwing the filter on by hand they would of had a torque setting...(wouldnt they?)............couldnt find a tourque setting for the filter...........does one excist?

It's not a rule of thumb, the directions are stamped on the side of the filter housing: 3/4 of a turn, or 270 deg, after the gasket makes contact with the mount surface.

A filter with a lubricated seal , tightened as the printed instructions tell you, will not fall off if it is tightened by hand. Many years ago the company I worked for had a fleet of Morris Ital vans ( remember them? ) . All had filters that were of a similar canister type. They were mounted to an aluminium casting . Several of these castings broke due to the filters being fitted 'dry' and over tightened with filter straps. Follow the instructions ! :bat:
