I have been looking at the internet and trying to find something that will show me my water temp in real time, found one, and it saves me buying a water alarm sensor, really works well when you google it, as the instructions begger belief. for £12 I can't complain,

HI Bob, good set up but I would have to had demolished my dash to fit this, the heads-up display just sits nicely on the dash, it turns on automatically so I don't have to fiddle around with it. I am just tweaking it up for the coming summer, it has the soft top so I would not use it for the winter months. one of the lads on here has offered to help me with my side decals in March or April and I will be glad of the help.

I have an old smart phone with torque app stuck on the centre console. I can monitor water temp and much more on that.
I have water temp, inlet air temp, long term and short term fuel consumption, long term and short term fuel trim and lambda readouts on the display. Cost nothing as the OBD2 dongle was there anyway and the phone is an old Samsung galaxy 3.

I have the phone attached to the car's electrics for power and it sits below the switch bank. Works well.

I'll get a photo later...:yesnod:

It's worth having both, a level sensor will warn of a long term slow leak or a catastrophic pipe failure long before the engine starts to overheat.

Yes with the torque ap and a suitable phone holder..you can achieve the heads up display...look at multiple dials or just the one...choose the type of gauge yo like...needle or digital etc and a whole lot more.

You can turn the display to heads up so it appears mirror image on your phone
End of the day it has got to be better having a float in the header tank to monitor if the coolant has dropped out onto the road...a temp gauge can't do that.

My system is the same as Davids & cost the same, however there was some talk of the dongle corrupting the ECU if left connected for a protracted period, Any thoughts?
I wouldn't rely on these readings to keep me informed of the coolant status, as has been said, an alarm system in the tank tells you when the coolant's low, before the temperature begins to rise.

Am I right in saying if the bottom hose pops and you loose all your coolant while cruising down the road..then the temp gauge is useless has the sensors have no water to monitor. .only fresh air and the temp of the engine rises accordingly with no alarm until the engine goes in self distruct..so the low level alarm is a must...seeing has there is a temp gauge already ha standard on the tf..the hud is just a novelty

Pretty much yes. That's what would happen.

The sensor would be reading air not coolant, it might go up if reading hot air or down if reading cold air.
Either is not a lot of use, if your coolant is on the road behind you.

The gauge temp sensor is so damped that it takes a long time(too long to prevent disaster) to react to temp changes.

The ECU temp sensor is more sensitive so would react faster. The temp reading on torque are from the ECU sensor.

A low level alarm is a MUST HAVE, in my opinion. It is the only thing that will warn of catastrophic coolant loss.

Hi All

Extremely interested in this subject however Airportable did make a comment which no one has commented on, which I think is very important, especially if one is considering a permanent installation of some sort. Here it is:

"however there was some talk of the dongle corrupting the ECU if left connected for a protracted period, Any thoughts?"

Has this been verified by experience?

Regards

Robert

Hi. this is significantly important information. I had not fitted a dongle just in case it corrupted the ECU. it was a case of better be safe than sorry. no-one I know has fitted a dongle, so this tells me something could be afoot. but I would like to know if anyone has had any problems with fitting a dongle. the fan warning buzzer is a great mod, I will be doing that when the weather is better, have a great Christmas and a great new year one and all.
