New MG sportscar coming?
Interesting that they could possibly be considering life after the current stupid SUV craze.
SUVs are already uncool, but of course, it takes the bogans/chavs/rednecks a long time to catch up with yesterdays trends...so the damned things will be still with us for some time.

I have an issue with the current owners of the famous octagon badge and it is that in the 10 + years that they have been in charge they have absolutely lost the plot with marketing strategy. The sporty image attached to the brand has also been diluted by the bland designs . They keep on announcing this and that in various motoring mags but nothing appears to happen . So I wouldn't hold my breath that this latest dream will ever appear . They even messed with the badge on one image that shows a round MG bonnet badge . Clueless !

Some of the crystal ball gazers, even predict that private ownership of autonomous cars won't exist, it would all be via Uber, Google or somesuch.
So in such a scenario, the cars would all be much the same, thereby reducing the number of manufacturers required to service a large volume fleet market with a very small number of companies doing the buying.
The only market left for these manufacturers will be the enthusiasts who would prefer to do their own driving.
Which would be performance/sports cars, proper offroaders with actual off-road ability, and other specialist niche market vehicles.

Incidentally the badge used on the car in the article gives nod to previous badges with its colour and there is a touch of the octagon within the circle while looking modern, no mistaking the brand name.

Electric cars are really hitting the performance figures now with the soon to be released E-Motion giving a 0-60 in just over 3 seconds, so I would imagine a two seater having at least similar acceleration figures.
Just not the same without that performance exhaust note and a bit of burble and pop!
It will not surprise me if there are overtones of the MGB in its final appearance as the Chinese do seem drawn to them in the concept designs we have seen in the MG magazines.

So it won't make much sense for them to engineer a platform for an internal combustion engine and then have to go electric soon after.
No, I fully expect it to be electric and most probably 4wd.
The question is:
How well do they understand the concept of a sportscar???
Other manufacturers in countries where they've had much more exposure to the idea of a sportscar have gotten it horribly wrong in the past.
Ford Australia and the Mazda 323/Ford Laser based Capri, is one that springs to mind.
Way too compromised with FWD and 4 seats jammed into it, a dismal failure compared to it's Mazda MX5, cousin.
They tried to sell 'em in the US under the Mercury brand, which was also a huge mistake, as the typical Mercury buyers weren't the sportscar type. (generally conservative old geezers, who went for fat slushy luxo barges or beige econobox shopping trollies. The Mercury brand died out as all its customer base died of old age, much like it's GM equivalent Oldsmobile )
