I've just experienced something that almost caused a necessary change of underwear!

When I reversed into a parking space in town I heard a clunk. I thought I'd hit something so stopped and checked, nope nothing there, phew. Finished parking and had a quick look around the car for any obvious reason.
Nothing, so did a bit of shopping, back to the car and off home I go.
The car seemed ok in town but as I accelerated past 30, there was an almighty vibration and shuddering from the rear of the car! It felt like one of the wheels was shaped like a 50p piece.

I pulled over and checked underneath...

I'm pretty sure that shouldn't look like that!

Blimey - it looks like the threaded bar has somehow popped out of the inner (also threaded) part?

How can that happen?

That must have been terrifying! The inner bush on my TCA gave way a while ago and that was scary enough with rear wheel steering at quite low speeds. I hate to think what it must have felt like with no connection at all!!!

Wow, holy crap indeed!
Let us know the reason for the problem, maybe the thread has stripped?

We will all be checking this out now.

But, well done, nobody hurt thank god!

:omg: Scary indeed, a definate brown trouser moment.

I remember my rear wheel bearing going on the motorway, I was doing around 90, the car was snaking all over the place.

Glad it didn't do any damage to you or your car. Blame it on the potholes because something must have seriously knocked your wheel to pull the threads out! Just check for other damage too.

on investigation,, the threads have been stripped out of the sleeved inner. There is a suspicious marked area on the wheel, not the normal kerb strike, just off centre of the wheel, suggesting that someone has hit the wheel. possibly when parked somewhere.

The really scary thought is that on the way into town I used the motorway and wasnt hanging around! If this had parted at speed I dread to think what would have happened.
I called the AA and the guy managed to get the shaft back in and followed me home at about 20 mph. Even at that speed the car was all over the place.
New track control arm ordered...

I had this with the Land Rover, the thread form on the track rod had rusted out to such a degree that whilst reversing into a parking place, a manoeuvre where the stresses are high, the track rod end parted company with the rod. Which, after all is what has happened here, only at the other end of the car. If I'd been going down the motorway it could have closed all three lanes, in all probability caused an early visit to the undertaker & made a couple of lines in the news.

I replaced this yesterday and examined the failed parts.
The thread from the adjuster bar had corroded and then been stripped, and left in the threads of the sleeve. That's why it looked as though the sleeve thread had disappeared.

Car is much better with all four wheels going in the same direction!

Glad it’s sorted, could have been a lot worse
