Morning, regarding the alarm system on the MG F Although I seem to have cleared the faults, and everything is working as it should the alarm system seems to be so temperamental , it seems to be more trouble than its worth .Someone on the Forum ,suggested having the ECU programed to disable the alarm I realise this is not correct for insurance purposes, but who is to know .To steal the car, someone would have to have the correct key, also to break into the car there is the hood stopping anyone !!!! Has any owner had the alarm disabled ,by reprogramming the ECU Len

You said: "the alarm system seems to be so temperamental , it seems to be more trouble than its worth "

A temperamental alarm system is one of the classic symptoms of intermittent wiring in the part of the harness attached to the L.H. hinge for the boot/engine compartment lid. Worth checking before going to the expense of disabling a useful feature, which as you say might give an insurer an excuse for not paying out on a claim. Also IF that wiring IS causing this fault, other faults WILL follow. This area of the loom sees a LOT of flexing, and is a well-known fault.

Considering the low value of our cars, no insurance company is going to forensically examine the ECU to see if the alarm has been disabled. I doubt they would even bother on high value cars and I doubt even more that they’d know how to.
In fact going by any of the insurance adjusters I’ve met……..they wouldn’t know if a train was up ‘em ‘till the passengers got out!

That’s a valid point & one that is worth pursuing. I’ve written a response once this morning & before my very eyes it buggered off never to read by anyone ever.
I’ve never had a problem with my boot wiring although the previous owners did & as soon as I was alerted to the potential problems I replaced the lot with some industrial trailer cable (not the standard bogo stuff) & then in some trunking.
I’ve been working on a design for someone & when applicable I try ideas out on my car, what the design is is irrelevant but I had to spoof the alarm, whilst active, into thinking the boot key had been turned whilst current, sufficient to trigger the alarm, was being drawn. Depending on the state of the alarm depends on whether the key microswitch is grounded or left floating. If your car doesn’t slumber in a warm dry garage condensation will form & this could potentially create high resistance due to corrosion or low due to tracking.
I’ll leave that hanging for others to pursue.
As ever I wish you the finest of fortune. Mike

Cobber you have such a delicate touch when it comes euphemism, one can only assume the loss adjuster, in this case, was bent over in the middle of the permanent way unaware of what was approaching from behind.
