Re:Step speed gearbox issue
Hiya everyone, I’m new to mgtf ownership and I have an issue with my step speed gearbox
When reverse or drive is selected the car seems to “jump” into gear and is trying to move before accelerating, when it starts moving it seems really aggressive and it’s quite jerky on acceleration also when slowing down it’s really jerky too, has anyone any idea what I need to look for ?
Thank you
David

I am sure I have read somewhere that a thorough draining and re-fill of fresh oil CAN (but not neccesarily does) cure the sort of problems you have reported.
MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT OIL!!!
Many garages Assume (as in "Makes and ASS out of U and ME" that ATF is the correct fluid. It is most definitely NOT. The Steptronic AKA Stepspeed is a CVT "Continuously Variable Transmission " as used on the DAF Variomatic. BMW added clever electronics etc. to simulate fixed speeds accessible from paddle shifts.
I googled the recommended oil and the picture attached is what came up:

I believe there is also a filter that should be changed at same time.

I fear you might find that problematic. If you look back through recent topics you’ll find reference to this, I recall there were a number of ideas floating about but I don’t remember a conclusion. If you track the post down send the proponents a PM, resolving something like this is better done in a group.
And keep us posted, I’m sure there will be a reoccurrence of this question & to be able to direct future owners to fellow Stepspeeders will only help like minded button pressers.

Do you mean finding a filter might be problematic ?

Yes I’m sorry, it wasn’t very clear, from my hazy recollection of the post the filter has been disconnected although there’s one for the Mini, which uses the same box however I recall there’s an incompatibility problem which has to be worked around. This is why I recommend contacting other Steppies.
