Wipers
Hi this problem has recently appeared on our 2001 MGF. When we turn the wipers on, there can be quite a delay before they actually start wiping the windscreen. Also when I pull down the stalk, as in to activate the wipers when I want to use the screenwash (which does work) they no longer come on.
Any ideas? Relay? Fuse? Motor? Stalk?
Thanks in advance.

Did the two faults arise at the same time or separately ?
Is the delay between turning the wipers on and them starting to move always constant or is it faster when the screen is wet, slower when dry ?

From what you describe, contacts on the wiper motor are worn. This can be replaced, but you would need to open the motor casing. Or buy replacement wiper motor.

As the washers are still working you can discount a blown fuse.
Before replacing the motor I would recommend removing the 2 T20 screws holding the case of the wiper motor and giving everything a thorough clean because it can get very grubby in there.
There is a good video on YouTube that explains how to do this.

I replaced the dumb original rod ends with rose joints (I like rose joint) & whilst I was in there I gave the motor a once over, including drilling a drain hole at the lowest point. I can confirm that the gizzards can get grim; if you find that you have to change it, ensure you get the appropriate one or if you buy the Freelander variant, which apparently is less expensive, check out the modifications you will be required to undertake before it works correctly.
It has been covered on here before.
