I have searched on the forum in relation to this topic and have noticed that most comments are from several years ago and that deploying wi-fi with an iPhone appears to have its problems.
So, with that in mind can anyone suggest an inexpensive device that is stand alone (I.e. plug it in using it’s own cable etc and without the need for a phone) and it works to read fault codes and re set the mil light.
The intended purpose is for a “glove box instrument “ for use in breakdown situations .I have pscan but am seeking a more portable tool.
Many I have approached on e what’s it market place suggest that what they are selling is not compatible.
Any ideas please?

Thank you for that suggestion. I have purchased something similar. When I get the opportunity I’ll plug it in and see if it works.
Many sellers of similar items (and I can’t recall if the one shown above was one) suggested incompatibility. One needed to know the vin number to check which I declined to reveal.
The Bluetooth option seemed to be potentially ideal as a backup but most seemed to function on Android but not IOS. And again incompatibility seemed to be an issue. Not sure about this but there was a suggestion that MG rather than Rover had one pin wired differently. So again questions relating to compatibility .

The only difficulty I am aware of relates to mk1 MGFs as they are not OBD2 compliant. Bluetooth only works with android phones. I believe iphones require a wifi connection.
I have used a multplex of wireless Obd2 readers on my mk2 F with no difficulty. ALTHOUGH I am using android devices and bluetooth.

After a lot of searching etc
I am a a little suspicious and awaiting a message back from the vendor but this item suggests compatibility wit iPhone etc
eBay item number:126811475001
Might be worth “a punt” if the item on order fails.

Re the ODB reader above
Reply from the vendor suggests not.

On my 2004 TF 135, before I got a pscan, I had mixed success with cheap ELM 327 OBD2 readers from eBay costing around a fiver. I have one that works with the TF and one that doesn't. The latter isn't faulty though because it works fine with my MB VIto.
These readers communicate with the phone, via bluetooth, running an app called Torque. Bluetooth is the problem here for iPhone users. My understanding is that Apple, in their wisdom, chose not to implement bluetooth in the same way as others.
One solution would be to pick up a cheap second-hand Android phone specifically for use with Torque and your chosen OBD2 reader. You wouldn't need a sim card, just download Torque via WiFi and away you go.

An update
I bought one of these off that well known “auction/buy it now” market place.
MS309PRO Car OBD2 OBD Scanner Auto Code Reader Engine Diagnostic Scan Tool UK
i plugged it in today to see if it had any response. It seemed to work. Battery voltage test indicated 11.8. At the battery with a multimeter it measured marginally over 12 (it is now back on trickle charge).
No fault codes were indicated and I wasn’t expecting any.
So hopefully as a glove box simple test tool it might do what it is intended for.

I had electrical gremlins that caused all sorts of problems including preventing the vehicle from starting. The OBD detected no faults but clearing them anyway enabled me to start the vehicle and get it to the garage.
