A few more points to add:

1. MG TFs come in an impressive variety of colors and interiors. It does not sound like much, but the choice of colors of MX-5s is quite limited by comparison. The color combinations - based on personal taste - can sometimes transform how you may feel about a car.

2. Not sure about part prices for MX-5s but most parts for MG TFs are available and inexpensive. There is also a large supply of used parts.

3. It is relatively straightforward (and satisfying) to address the shortcomings on an MG TF. For example: (i) Bilstein shocks and LE85 sway bars; (ii) soundproofing body panels; (iii) Kmaps or similar re-map ECU; (iv) tires (already covered) (v) shift cable end joints, etc.

4. Pretty much any issue is already documented on this site, with lots of photos. I am not sure what it is like to work on an MX-5 but MG TF are relatively easy. The hardest parts have to do with engine access and rusted bolts. Many of the issues that these cars have are just a matter of being patient to fix some small things. The infomation on this site is very helpful in terms of showing what to look for and how to do it.

If you are thinking about buying  a particular car, post it here in advance with photos and you will get lots of advice of what to look / check for!

I believe sometimes seeing rusted bolts etc can be a good thing it shows the quality and longevity of certain parts

Thanks for the advice all. I'm keeping my eye out for a few cars local to take a look at.

Really would like the 160 but they seem few and far between - especially local to me in Essex.

The car would just be for weekends etc. so happy to spend some time doing some jobs & and TLC needed. I luckily have a double garage so it should fit in there if I clear some space, which will make doing any jobs a little easier...

So... the hunt begins. Wish me luck!

A 135 remapped (+ 10-15 HP an lots of torque) and with air induction and exhaust (maybe 5 HP more), with a sound engine, is a lively car, full of good sensations. Of course most of us would love to own a 160, rare as hens teeth in Spain, where I live. But a 135 is more than enough fun 😎

Anything worth knowing about the LE500s?

I hear the N series doesn’t have the head gasket issue?

Cheers Alec. I’m just in Basildon so not too far from Southend.

Are there many meets around Essex you are aware of?

I've seen a car advertised. An 04 TF 135 Cool Blue.

Looks like the last MOT was back in 2019. Owned and garaged for last 14 years, currently on SORN. Cam belt done - I assume head gasket too but I need to confirm. Advertised with having part service history.

It's a low milage car for a good price - would the gap in MOTs and part service history be a reason to avoid?

Thanks,
Ross

It depends on the price and moreover what you consider a good price.

its woth challenging on why it was taken off the road and as much information about it's present condition. . Price, photos etc would help people guestimate so is this an advert you can link to ?

Its worth asking why there was a gap in MOTs. Usually the answer is they just werent using it, had 2 other cars etc but didnt want to part with it.
Mind you. it's rare anyone would answer it's because their old local, half blind, MOT tester retired and it took them 2 years to save up to buy enough metal to weld up the bottom of the car enough to give it a hope in hell of passing.

Lack of a formal full service history can be a good negotiating tactic to trot out for higher priced cars but as youve not said what the price is Ive no idea if it would cut much ice with the seller.

If you are looking for a known quantity but dont want to spend the earth you may have seen Len's lovely silver TF is up for sale now. You can follow the restoration of that car through his forum posts here. Ive seen it in the metal and it's definitely worth a trip to the midlands to view

So its up for £2,450 with 37,000 miles.  I spoke to the chap and he is an older guy that just doesn't use the car anymore. He couldn't confirm if the HG was done, but I know I can get that done for less than £500, but an MG specialist did the cambelt at 35,000.

He confirmed no rust on sills and he has started it driven it 'up the road' now and then.

Seems like a straight car. I think its worth a look...
