Hi David...
Just watched my baby being offloaded from the back of a recovery truck after a 5 hour journey from Devon... RAC were faultless... but it's a bloody long way.... symptoms: well, when you change gear and accelerate, it over revs, and when the recovery driver tried to drive it up even the remotest of inclines, the car was having none of it... The first RAC guy thought it might be just the slave cylinder, which I am told may tie in with the recent fluid loss I suffered, but I am told that even this is a big job, and almost as big as changing a clutch?

Mmm, it does sound like the clutch friction plate.
The slave cylinder or a seized clutch arm would tend to make it difficult to change gear.
If you get the engine cover off, with an assistant operating the clutch pedal you'll be able to check the movement of the arm and if the slave cylinder is leaking.
That, at least will confirm the clutch plate worn.
If you have to have the clutch plate replaced, it would be worth considering fitting a Mike Satur clutch arm, which has a grease nipple. This prevents future clutch arm problems.

I know Clive recommends dropping the engine out:-
Here
Have a read of that, and maybe give Clive a PM.

got a mechanic sorted, the other option was "Mr Clutch", costing around the £400.00 mark, although he is hoping to bring it in lower than that, other quote was £500...

im told you dont NEED to remove the subframe and engine but i defiantly would, it's not hard to do and make the job much much easier
defiantly fit the MS clutch leaver, its not like it takes any more work once the gearbox is off and it's not expensive
btw the slave cylinder shouldn't be much work, its easily accessible and not a big part
