I know I've seen somewhere that it's possible to check the fan operation, but I cant find it, Any ideas??
I found my water was down by about 1/2 pint. which is unusual , it's never used any before.
I took it about 10 miles , no sign of temp rise on water or oil gauges. but when I stopped the expansion tank started to boil over.
Engine bay fan was on but couldn't hear the rad fan,?? :-?

You need to disconnect the plug from the engine temp sensor(ECT). The fan should come on(with ignition on).

talking of caps, do I remember reading that there are various caps on the market and of which ones are recommended/avoided? would be handy to keep a spare.

Broken cap could be an option.

How about the idea to check the front fan fuse at first ?
What VIN is your MGF. May be it's still the old setup with 15amps only. Prone to fail :rant:
Fan fuse is located inside the bonnet fusebox. Replace it with 20amps in any way.
