The only other link I can find is to Fiat - Several of the XPower SV's exterior and interior parts were borrowed from current and past Fiat models. The headlights, for example, were taken from a Punto Mk.2 and the rear lights borrowed from a Fiat Coupe.

De Tomaso introduced the Guarà in 1998. This car The is based on the Maserati Barchetta (1991) from which it inherited everything but the engine. The Barchetta was a true race car but the prototype Barchetta Stradale never made it into production. De Tomaso put the Barchetta into a new suit, named it De Tomaso Gurà Barchetta (that’s why the Guarà was first presented as topless car) and developed a coupé and a convertible (Spider was powered by a BMW V8) from it. The Guarà was presented in 1993 and went into production in 1994. The Biguà was presented 1996 in Geneva.

Tom Tjaarda (Stevens Thompson Tjaarda van Starkenburg), born July 23, 1934, is an American automobile designer of Dutch origin. He is the son of the Dutch-American auto designer Joop Tjaarda van Starkenburg (1897–1962), who renamed himself John Tjaarda on coming to the U.S. in 1923. (The elder Tjaarda's creations included the Lincoln Zephyr.)
The parents of Tom divorced in 1939 and he lived with his mother in Detroit. Tom studied high school in Birmingham High School, Birmingham (Michigan, USA) (1953 renamed to Seaholm High School).

So we have the Stevens link (Peter Stevens the SV designer) and the Birmingham link.

Tom Tjaarda designed he Pantera.

The Pantera replaced the Mangusta and the Bigua followed the Pantera to become X80 and then the SV.

Martin! You said the answer without even knowing it! The Pantera was the replacement for the Mangusta which name was subsequently resurrected by the Qvale Mangusta.

De Tomaso Pantera  71-91
De Tomaso Mangusta  67-71
Qvale Mangusta  2000-02
MG X80  2001
MG SVR  03-05

Sorry, I should have listed the cars in order and been more specific, I knew you were looking for the Mangusta but was surprised to stumble upon the two coincidences of which I was not aware.
Any one remember the Corgi Mangusta (giving my age way) with the pop out back chassis just like the real thing?

Nope. But my favourite toy car as a kid looked similar: a red Maserati Merak.

I can't pinpoint the exact car, but, I believe it is Swedish and the conversion from a clay model of the MG XPower SV to a production car, including all requirements, was done in just 300 days by the Swedish company Caran.

No, it's not a Swedish car, but take a closer look at the grille.

The car you pictured Martin is, I believe, a 1937 Riley 1½ Lynx Tourer

Now a link to the 2003 MG SVR?

I do know they both had 18" wheels
