Paul,
My thinking is, if the measure is feet per mile, that is distance travelled in a certain time.
If Jan is not correct with stopping distance, is it acceleration instead????

Gary, very logical approach, unfortunately not correct.
It was measured by the factory in feet per mile but we would today express it in other units. It is very important that this is set correctly on your F or TF?

These were taken from an interesting film from 1931. It gives you a look around the Abingdon factory, very interesting

Scratch that,
Is it Engine testing of some sort. The piston travel was measured in feet per mile.
For example testing of the MG TD MIdget with the XPAG engine, piston travel was 2400 feet per mile (or feet per minute at 60mph) which was apparently considered high..... That's where my technical knowledge stops, what was normal of the era I do not know.
Of course I may be barking up the wrong tree.
If by some miracle I am right, please continue to post the next question, I throw the floor open to anyone as I will busy washing/polishing/waxing/hoovering and general cleaning in preparation for the MG's in the Park on Sunday

Correct answer posted while Iwas writing
However, one one respect I was right with a different answer to the question,
but not necessarily what the picture was testing...
here's my info
http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_cr_sept_53.htm
look halfway down the Mechanical Details section on the right.

Part 1) was only in there to pad it out really, the wheel alignment was the real question. If you watch the film you will see what a quick operation it was to set the wheel alignment, very different from the laser equipment we are used to.

Craig you are a gentleman, but the points go to the person who completes the answer.
Look forward to your new question.
I'll just go and tot up the scores and bake an update pie, see you in a bit.
BTW Gary, Andy and SS commiserations, better luck with the next question

Whilst you ponder the answer to Craig's question above, here is an update of the MG Quiz running order.
After 311 questions, this weeks top performers were alanrt54 and bacchus who both scored a magnificent 3 wins. :woohoo:
An interesting battle continued between new girl Tui and old hand MartinW, who just managed to maintain his 1 point lead after they both notched up 2 wins. :yesnod:
So here is they way things now stand.
Take a look at the action packed picture in the previous post and see if you can score a win by finding the link.

Whilst having a cup of tea, I couldn't resist
The flying MGB is being driven by Ian McKean with navigator J. Kerswell visible in the orange helmet.
This is one of the original 11 LHD prototypes, a factory MGB GT V8. MG had plans at the time to export the GT V8.
The Tram I have seen in Bergamo. It is called Sirius and was styled by Pininfarina.
Which provides the MG link as the MGB GT was also a Pininfarina design.

Just in case Pininfarina is the link you were after Craig, here is a question for you all...
1) A beautiful, red MGA (1959) 1600 Twin-Cam Roadster
2) A beautiful, red MGA (1961) 1600 MKII Roadster
Question is what is it that Mike said owner 1 can stop two weeks after Bonfire night this year that 2 can't and who is Mike?
