Fitting scoops- A serial?

Ok,
I have purchased some scoops via the good offices of Paul (Polo on this forum).

As I had already purchased a second-hand pair of side intakes for the F, I thought I would post up my effort to unite these two purchases prior to fitting them to the car. I thought I might make this like a series.


So here it is - Scoop my intake!


Act 1 - the cast is introduced.



Cast list

I willing idiot
1x pair of scoops
1x pair of F side intakes
Adhesive - lots of
Masking tape - several rolls
This is what a scoop looks like:-



Remove your side intake from the car by undoing the two screws visible through the mesh. Take it inside and you should have something looking like this:-



Now the first thing to do, unless you intend to paint the scoop before you fix it to the intake, is that you will need to remove the mesh.

As I want to blend the scoop to the intake and then paint the result, so that, (hopefully!)the finished article will appear like original equipment, the mesh came out.

The original mesh is held in by slotting into a groove from the back, and then having a fixative applied . If you're lucky, like I was, the mesh will come out by flexing the intake slightly. If not you may need a sharp blade to cut the glue away. (Be careful!)


So now you should have this:-

Put the mesh away for later.

Act 2 - They meet.

Now this can be a bit tricky.

They can be almost matched the wrong way around. Like this:-



But the correct way is like this:-



Right, now that we know the right way, we need to attach the scoop.

I roughed up the bonding area with a coarse sandpaper and then applied a run of adhesive to the edge of the scoop.



Then I offered the scoop up to the intake and slid it into place.




When I was happy I held it in place with masking tape.
I then ran adhesive along the inside of the seam, and smoothed it with a wet finger.



OK, with the newly joined couple in a happy embrace, I put them away to allow them to get truly bonded.

I will be keeping a close eye on this thread as I still have mine to do.

Like you, I bought a second pair of intake surrounds - £3.71 from eBay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280427634403&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT - they are even the correct colour!

I am also wanting to blend them in. What is the best adhesive/filler to use? I have found that the scoops dont seem to fit well to the surrounds, so will require some blending in.

PS - careful with the timber floor - you dont want to get an overspill of adhesive..!!

Well, as for adhesive, I used 'No more nails ultimate' because it was the only appropriate adhesive I had.:whistle: I don't think it's critical, especially as I was going to lather filler on them, but you need something that will be able to be smoothed and accept paint afterwards, so don't use silicone sealant!

The filler to be used is Chemical Metal, available from all good motor stores. (not liquid metal - been watching Terminator too much!)

As to 'fit', apart from getting the scoops the right way around, if you set the scoop just inside the edge of the intake that appears to give the best fit.

And don't get me started about that bloody oak floor. I fitted it myself and all I can say is 'AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I know, but grammar and spelling go out the window when I'm hungry.

I'll also be watching this thread. You've done a great job!

I did mine yesterday, but I'm not sure if they will hold as the curve of the scoop isn't an exact match to the curve of the intake. No matter where you position it, there are small gaps. We will see....

OK,

Let us commence with Act 3 - the filler makes a bow!

With the adhesive set firmly, I removed the masking tape to behold this:-



Here is a view with the areas that I intended to fill:-



I mixed the two part filler and smoothed it into the areas shown above. When it had set, I used a coarse wet and dry paper to shape it:-



After that I continued to work the filler with finer and finer wet and dry until I was happy with the shape. I then applied a coating of primer grey:-



Act 4 - Do it again!
As I expected, the coat of paint highlighted my inadequacies in the smoothing department, so I repeated the above steps in filling the small imperfections and rubbing them down again.



When I was finally happy I applied another coat of primer and set it aside for the night:-
